Re: Tutorial - Black Level Setup

wowzers.. a little harsh at the end with the profit statements lol.. but all in all a good demo, as long as you remember it is for broadcast purposes only.

Re: Tutorial - Black Level Setup

It's also valid for any DVD you might create from any digital camera and digital NLE. The DVD itself will eventually see an analog monitor at some point.

Re: Tutorial - Black Level Setup

I have no idea what the heck any of that stuff means  ???

Is the DVX affected?

Re: Tutorial - Black Level Setup

It applies to any video device: cameras, VTRs and NLEs. You can "ignore" setup if you know your footage is never going to be broadcast by TV stations in North America. If it is, then you have to make sure your blacks go no lower then 7.5 IRE, otherwise your tape get's rejected.

If you have no intention whatsoever to have your stuff broadcast, then you can "ignore" setup.

Re: Tutorial - Black Level Setup

Well you can ignore to an extent.. if you are bring in and mixing video from differnt analog and digital sources, you want to make sure they all balance out nicely when played back regardless of broadcast or not.

So the new rule of thumb would be you can ignore if you shoot with the DVX100 and never intend to broadcast.

Re: Tutorial - Black Level Setup

True, but if you set your NLE to 7.5 and your DVX to 7.5, then you never have to worry about anything. It then becomes an after-thought... So to speak!

Re: Tutorial - Black Level Setup

did anyone test to see if the output changed with the DVX from that test they showed with the camera-->analog connection 2 deck-->monitor set up? If we do have an issue with having blacks that are crushed or washed out, can it be fixed in post?

Re: Tutorial - Black Level Setup

okay, so now I'm more confused than I was previously, but maybe I'm always making a mountain out of a mole hill. Anyway...

So if I just want to safeguard myself for possible broadcast, what should I do? Shoot with the DVX @ 7.5, and that's it? I'm running FCP 4 and I can't seem to find any sort of control to make a sequence have a 7.5 IRE black level, and the built-in waveform monitor seems kinda vaugue to me. I actually use a JVC deck for capture and output, but I want to make sure that I'm NTSC safe, and it would be nice to keep that as streamlined as possible, and not have to tweak the hell out of the image in post.

Man, I really HATE this stuff sometimes. I want to be a filmmaker. Didn't realize I first had to be a computer whiz. Film, why are you so expensive?

Uh, yeah. Exactly. Why not? I mean I know the blacks aren't as black, but if I want to be broadcast safe, what can I do to ensure it, without resorting to filtering the hell out of the image in post?

Re: Tutorial - Black Level Setup

this is a big deal.. but if you ever hand a digital file to an editor with 7.5 setup he will kill you.

Remember.. we are digitial till the end.

Re: Tutorial - Black Level Setup

7.5IRE is a level for analog broadcast. A digital file will have RGB values where 16RGB is legal black for digital television PAL and NTSC. Where you place 16RGB in the amalog space 0 or 7.5 is up to you on output to analog devices.

Shooting with either 7.5 or 0 IRE only affects the black level by about 2.5 IRE. You can create the same level black with 7.5 at -8 and 0 at -6. Just pick one and learn what it does to your image.

I know it's all digital, but making sure your setup is at 7.5 IRE (or 16RGB) at record time will not add up to 32RGB in post. It stays at 16RGB? Right? Why would the editor be upset if the footage is broadcast safe? :-/

Re: Tutorial - Black Level Setup

Although enlightening this is still a commercial vide-brochure by JVC (just listen to the closing statement …only JVC has the camcorder blah blah…). Rather than keeping this thread growing with questions and speculations it would be beneficial to hear from someone on the broadcasting business explain how to set the DVX (and other similar Pro-CAMs) for possible broadcast. That way whoever wants or plans to make a project for broadcast publication sets his DVX accordingly. My 2 cents (which today are worth only 1.49 hundreds of an Euro :-/ ).
