turning something into gold?

I need to produce a shot where someone grabs like a bottle or something and it turns to gold. What would be the easiest way to make this look realistic?

thanks

I'd paint a copy of the prop gold, shoot overlapping shots before and after the change from normal to gold, and then apply a transition. Depending on the finish, gold may or may not reflect like a mirror, so if you were to do it with 3d models, you may need an image to apply as the reflection. Doing this practically would probably eliminate that need.

Will there be any camera movement?
If Yes, a 3d bottle will have to be implemented. Depending on the view you can create a gold bottle overlay and have some kind of opacity map synced to the hand touch.

A static gold bottle overlay can be made in 2d .

Not sure what other tools you got besides AfterEffects, but pending on the shot you can getaway with a static 2d.

I figure I could use a mask to reveal the gold and shoot it on a tripod or something. How do people create the effect of paint taking over their body or something.....like in matrix where the bad guy starts taking over his body.

You could try morphing it with masks in AfterEffects.

Or if you got 3d , opacity mapping. Will be better if bottle moves.

I think there should be a transition in the change. Like Gold was growing over it. Make it fast with blur too.

I would say, do a motion track of the bottle, and then apply your necessary color correction with a masked ajustment layer..and it should track it pretty well.

If any of the above suggestions are too daunting, you could do it the old fashioned way-
Actor picks up original bottle, turning so that his back is to the camera and hiding the bottle from view. Shot two is a cut shot and shows the bottle in his hand is a gold duplicate.

I know a guy who could do this for you. All he wants is your firstborn...

Though I hear you can get a great discount if you know his name.

..well, my first though of an easy way to do this would be to use a smaller object that is shiney/satin smooth and close to chroma green or blue or red or whatever will be easy to separate from the rest of the colors in the sceen with a chroma sample and a couple garbage mattes or whatever. then start the item out as a dull color or whatever, and then just keyframe colorize it to gold and use a slight cc glass filter or something similar to give it a shinier metallic look. you can do the reveal by using masks with a duplicate layer or whatever. keep the shot tight and it will be easier to isolate the color if its in the guys hand or whatever. but if you get the jist of what im saying, you only need to start out with an object of odd (chroma distinct) color to begin with, and then do a chroma based color change on it to whatever aooearance you want. then add a little shininess and specular highlight with a decent filter. if it has little logos or something you can easily track matte that area and colorize it all to the basic color you want. just use another duplicate layer as a matte for any effects that you only want to show up in the sample area for an overlayed layer to be colorized gold.

basically ,just use something shiny (satin would work better because it wont have colorized reflections to mess with your chroma based color change) of an isolated color, and just change its color, saturation, lightness, metallic look ect. based of its chroma.

doing it this way will allow you to have 0 motion tracking if the shot is complex, and should be 0 match moving or rotoing if you use good track mattes to your advantage. it not going to give you a perfectly poliched finished gold peice, but that always bothers me anyway. if you turn somethnig to gold .. why is it automatically smooth and polished? shouldnt it still have the same surface imperfections and texture ..just gold?
