Tupac performs at Coachella 2012

it is a simple video projection, wrongly called hologram, while even the provider of such service call it hologram, because it is the closest thing that come in mind of customer, and it is easier to sell than probably just calling it video projection or "pepper ghost" effect .http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepper's_ghost
IMHO, i find too bad that when engineer make great thing with simple concept but highly mastered technology, there is a marketing guy popping up with new words, wrong terms, or even lies. Today people believe they watch movies in 3D, when it is
really sterescopic and see hologram when it is simple video projection.
They use a special film (that cost the hell) ,transparent, reflecting the picture. So it is flat, nothing to do with an hologram.
what is strange is the picture need to be shot with some caution (usually HD, very bright , with background removed)
and some care taken in post to allow the projection (like compensating heavy keystoning due to projector position, usually high in the ceiling, projecting down to the scene, so the light crossing trough the screen is hitting the floor and not seen by spectators).
It is possible they use a fake Tupac (real or not) with dubbed voice, because probablity they would have shot that years before (actually 16) with this event
in mind is very low. It even fits the real singer in the 2nd part so well, that it looks too good to be true.
It is not very knew technology (well it set us back more than 140 years ago) but using it to put dead people back to living stage is new.

Since the new levels reached in motion capture and real time computer generated characters (see last Spielberg movie "Tintin"),
it is not impossible that we can see very soon, real time animated avatars on scene, with a real person acting behind the scene for all movement, so total interactivity with audience and real people can be achieved.
We will just miss the real time speech synthesis (for speaking between the recorded song, or even interpreting new songs), but that could come sooner than late now.

The company behind most of these kind of projects is http://www.musion.co.uk/

There is also another setup, that use huge mirrors and transparent screen to give the illusion of 3D (floating object), but again , it is not hologram.
