TUMBE: DVX/PS/35mm Primes trailer!!!!

Hey all..

A short while back I posted some grabs and a small clip in the HVX forum about this but we just completed the tralier that will be shown throughout AFM next month and I thought I would toss it up here. Why here and not the HVX thread? Because 90% of this movie was shot on the DVX with the PS technik adapter and 35mm lenses. Only the more recent pick up shots have been HVX (also with the adapter and lenses)

FYI The first four shots you see are HVX after that most of the trailer is DVX footage (pretty much anything you see with people in it is DVX) color graded in Final touch.. not an all over job as we were pressed for time but enough to give an idea. Also this is not your typical trailer you would show audiences.. It is meant to showcase the production valuye of the film mainly concentrating on money shots and less on conveying the story. Also the end font is big and basic so at AFM when it airs on the plasmas it will be visible throughout the room.

So without further ado.. I give you "Tumbe"

Nevermind, my question is answered. The DVX+35 looks crazy. What 35mm Primes did you use? Zeiss?

By the way. Good GAHD your image quality looks good. Can we PLEASE get an HD sized Trailer for the DVXuser community?

480p at least?

Awesome trailer.

I see you have Mayra Veronica in your film! I know I'm stating the obvious, but she's insanely HOT!!!

Yeah... I remember seeing a bit of this in the HVX section. Excellent work, very Professional. That's all I have to say about that.

Hey thanks all thus far for the kind words...

Kholi, Glad you liked. Yeah the combo can be very impressive when the right lighting and lens selection is made with the adapter. The PS was especially nice because it has such a nice clean piece of glass.. As for the lenses when we shot that we actually were using Nikon still camera lenses and some were very nice. The 55 we had was almost flawless. I will deff try and get a bigger version up.. if not for this trailer deff for the main one when we cut it.

G-man.. I am impressed.. good job catching Myra in the movie. Yeah she plays a rather large role, and she is a badass in the flick.. gets to do a bit of killing.. including strangling a guy while another performs.. well.. lets say he is a Cunning Linguist.

Finally i will say this.. these days movies and their image is made in the Color Grade.. it truly is an art unto itself and I think more and more as time goes on you will start seeing DI artists getting top credit in movies. a blah image can become spectacular and the spectacular ones can simply blow your mind. Movie making is about alot of elements brought togethere for the final product... we are just trying to get as close as we can.

You know, the moment you said graded in final touch it explained it all.

I bet you had all the nodes up and running -- natress plug-ins, noise reduction, power windows out the door...

How much did you pay for your post color? If you don't mind me asking.

FYI I am not aquiring films at AFM so no need to hide the budget from me!!!! hahahaha.

Good luck.

Hey again thanks everyone for the kind words and encouragment.. nice to see all our blood sweat and tears (of which there were many) adding up to something.

I will shed alittle light Dean. One thing.. we didn't use noise reduction.. infact we added noise by boosting. We are mimicing alot of the "Man on Fire" "Domino" colors, so the noise and grain add to that but truith be told very little of the original raw footage had noise. The glass in the PS technik is truly quite impressive.

As to price for the DI.. thats hard to say, since we did it in house. We are a fully self sufficent production studio. We own all our own grip gear including dollie, 30' jib, stedi cam and a 2 ton grip truck, we also own our camera gear and we are a post house as well with three rooms up runningt final cut pro HD on mac GS quads and one room running final touch. And my boss (the owner) is an incredible colorist.

Now the helicopter shots.. We own a gyro mount, so we hooked that up to the helicopter and up we went. We did have to lean out with the remote to start and stop recording though LOL.

DANG THATS HOT!!!
Once again shows what the HVX is capable of in the right hands!!!!

Actuall not to be picky but with the exception of about 5 shots the rest of that footage is all DVX. And in the right hands.. while true, it is also aboutt he right gear and right post regardless of what you shoot with.

I really like the look of these clips.

Was the "Miami" grad filter in DI or in the Mattebox?

Did you shoot for natural/unfiltered colors/skintone knowing that you were going DI?

Did you use FT:SD, FT:HD, FT:2k? Do you have the hardware also? I am interested in getting into DI work.

Didn't Apple just buy Final Touch? Yes.

Actually now we shoot everything clean and do it all in post but at the time we shot this Final touch wasn't out yet, so we did use some grad filters. But that is on two shots I can see in the trailer, and all were tweaked in post. As yes we did try and keep natural skin tones as much as possible and that is something both the DVX and the HVX are great for.

If I am not mistaken we have FT: HD and yes we recently got the hardware as well which is awesome.. it makes it so much easier to get in there and tweak the details.

And yes... Apple did just buy silicon.. Hopefully that is a good thing but it remains to be seen. This has been rumoured for a long time and we have been a beta tester for them since almost the begining so we have heard good things but.. only time will tell. I can tell you since the sale was announced no one at silicon has answered anyones emails.. but i suspect that is more of a legal thing till the sale is all said and done. We are hoping for good things.

Great work. That is definitely some of the best DVX footage ive ever seen. Who was your DP? Congratulations again and I hope this goes places.

BTW- What was your budget for the film, and how much did you pay in rental for the PS, or do you own that?

Hey George, we are all set on this one but we deff hope to be on to the next film as of early next year so stay in contact and I'll let you know.

Invision: Hey thanks man, or DP was actually Lenny the owner of the studio and director of the movie. He is also the colorist. We actually own the PS, infact in regards to the PS for the DVX we actually owned the very first one they produced (serial # 000000 LOL) and later bought a second for our second DVX. WE have since sold both of those and bought one for our HVX. WE would eventually like to get a second HVX and an additional PS for that so we can do two camera coverage on feature shoots.

As for the budget.. with AFM so close and everything that goes along with it I really.. really.. really can't say. The truth is the budget doesnt really apply to anyone else so the information while it might be good for and ego boost and a pat on the back doesnt really help anyone. Its is sort of like Rodriguez dropping $7,000 on "El Mariachi" and it making him famous.. that worked for him, it is very unlikely to work again. Since we own all our gear, handle all pre pro, production and post pro ourselves and called in favors left and right for everything from actors to locations and props.. it wouldn't really help anyone.. it just might inspire. Hopefully one day soon we can give that info.
