Trying to upgrade FCS2 Academic to FCS3 Academic

MacBook Pro 2.6 GHz Intel 4GB RAM. OS 10.5.8. Just tried to upgrade twice, following prompts to load discs as presented. Custom install as presented. After 'Successful Installation' computer runs dead slow. 10-20 seconds to get a response when clicking on a menu or disclosure triangle. After minutes, program opens. Video will not play. Takes many seconds to get the playhead to move on the timeline.
Tried different startups: other programs on the computer operate normally until any FCS3 program is opened, then everything bogs down dead slow. Can anyone tell me what I have done wrong with my install? Thanks.

You cannot to a full upgrade from Academic.

Shouldn't one be able to uninstall FCS 2 academic and then install FCS 3 academic though?

That's what you have to do. You can't buy an "upgrade" license for an academic version, you have to pay full price for the new version.
