Trying to Create a light effect in post.

I'm trying to create an effect and was wondering what you guys would recommend.

I need it to seem like there was suddenly a very bright light the room to the point where it washes out most of the screen. Kinds like if a flashbulb went off in your face.

Got any suggestions on what software to use or how to do it?

Re: Trying to Create a light effect in post.

I'd recommend using After Effects. There are several different things you could try: You could layer the shot over itself and use the "Add" or "Color Dodge" modes along with a "Levels" effect. Or you could just play with brightness and contrast. There are really so many different ways to do this effect that you're just going to have to mess around with whatever software you have until you get the look you want.

I've been playing around with after effects all day with tons of variations. I agree, there's no "end all" solution because its a subjective "look" I'm trying to find.

If anyone has any quick hints that would be great. I'll try the color dodge and add options and see what becomes of it.

Knoll Light Factory 2 can do it a hundred different ways...all of them realistic and visually spectacular. I've used it on a bunch of music videos and shorts...expensive but will come in handy for years.

A lot of NLEs have a "flash" transition preset -- what are you using?
