True SD card speeds

I ran some tests to try and determine how fast SD cards operate in the GH1 the way it uses them.

I tested a Transcend class 10 card claiming 20MB/s speed. When I test it as a physical device using 512k blocks it comes very close to the claimed speed (20MB/s) when reading - 19.8MB/s. Writes are slower - about 17MB/sec. This is not how the GH1 uses the devices, however. The GH1 uses a cluster size (for these cards at least) of 32K. If I test the card as a logical device using 32K blocks the read speed becomes 17.3MB/s and the write speed becomes 14.5MB/s. That means the write speed I can count on is 116Mb/s (bits, not bytes) at best. This is much better performance than is required for class 10 (which requires 80Mb/s), but somewhat less than they claim.

Class 6 cards from Transcend claim 6MB/s speed. Using the above test method the read speed becomes 15MB/s and the write becomes 8.8MB/s resulting in a maximum bitrate of 70.4 Mb/s. I know from testing that I can cause occasional failures with these cards using a 60Mb/s peak data rate ("C" settings), so I know I am not always getting the maximum 70.4Mb/s throughput. This is significantly better performance than Transcend claims.

If we factor in the whole "rogue frame" issue - which temporarily doubles bitrates - that means that if you have used the "C" settings (60Mb/s peak), rogue frames will cause occasional failures because 60Mb/s x 2 = 120Mb/sec, which is higher than the 116Mb/s best case maximum for the class 10 card. It seems that things aren't so mysterious after all.

My conclusion is that the Transcend class 6 cards can be counted on to reliably operate at 120% of their rated speed, and the Transcend class 10 cards can be relied upon at 70% of their claimed speed. Note that this factors in the camera's behavior, which significantly affects performance - so it isn't a comment on Transcend's marketing claims. Also, Transcend only claims 48Mb/s for class 6 but 160Mb/s for class 10. I think the big throughput claim in the class 10 card is for reads only - whereas conformance to a class requires that the lesser of read or write performance be used.

These are sustained speed. There isn't really any such thing as burst speed - that's more of a buffering issue. Also, sustained speed can be profoundly affected by things such as memory fragmenting, etc...

The best answer I can give is that these tests were done on freshly formatted SD cards - so they are sort of like "best case sustained speed", if that makes any sense to you.

Which program are you using for your read/write test? Also what is your camera's serial number? Using the Transcend Class 6 16GB card and my GH1, serial (WE9LC002009, made in China), the"C" setting fails frequently for me.

I am wondering if our card speeds are the same, if the models made from China or Japan make a difference? Therefore I would like to test my card speed using the exact same program with the exact same test routines.
 
I do get occassional errors with the class 6 card with the "C" settings. Ergo my statement that I don't get the full 72Mb/s throughput. On the class 10 card - never a failure. If you want reliable performance with class 6 cards you have to use the "B" settings. The rated speed for class 6 cards is 48Mb/s - which is less than the peak 60Mb/s of the "C" settings. Even at 120% - the class 6 card can still only do 57.6 Mb/s reliably. This is why I suggested 120% and not more. My test was done under fairly ideal conditions for 32K clusters, so you have to back off somewhat. It's the best performance you'll ever see out of these cards with the GH1, not the minimum performance level. Also, if you have set the Native 24p setting you can get failures no matter how you have set anything else.

My Camera was made in China. I seriously doubt there is a performance difference to be found there - both Japan and China use the same digital components. It's not like analog devices, where it could well make a difference.

A good test program is called "H2TESTW" - you can find it on the web. I didn't rely on that program (I have others which are not available for free) but this program yields very similar results.

Are you using Transcend cards? There is quite a difference between manufacturers. All class 6 means is that 48Mb/s is the guaranteed speed - and that's quite a bit below the "C" settings, and a fair amount below what the Transcend cards can do. The average bitrate doesn't mean anything - only the peak rate does, and that's 60Mb/s for the "C" settings.

Oh, I just noticed a typo in my original post. Transcend claims 48Mb/s on class 6 cards, not 60Mb/s. I've corrected it. Sorry about that.
