I rather liked season 1 of True Detective, despite the weak plot. The highlights for me was the acting and interaction between Harrelson and McConaughey - just outstanding. The cinematography was excellent, the mood good and so on. As I mentioned, the plot was the weakest link here and the resolution pretty uninspiring - a garden variety pervert - very much a "movie reality" with no feeling of realism or any kind of "truth" (by which I mean dramatic truth).
Season 2 I found actually unwatchable, gave up after the first episode.
And then came season 3 for which I had high hopes. The reviews were generally raving, especially about the acting of Mahershala Ali. I wasn't familiar with him - never saw Green Book.
I hated it. I guess I'm pretty alone in my opinion, but to me it just didn't deliver from the very start - frankly already the way too cute titles put me off... overworked and underdelivered. The most prominent sensation I experienced like a heavy blanked over the whole thing was an overwhelming boredom. It's just a bloody bore. I didn't give flying ______ about the kids, Ali's deal, the weaka$$ plot, the whole shebang was just a droning long stretch of b o r i n g. Whatever shooting style charm the first season had was totally absent here - instead it was replete with conspicous incompetence, like right from the start, the interview of Ali where he looks to his left at a detective who on the reverse shot sits to his right - just highschool level garbage shooting. The cinematography was uninspiring and pedestrian.
It seems to me all the weakest parts of season 1 were here brought to the fore, and there was zero to compensate for them. I find Nic Pizzolatto a poor - very poor - writer who specializes in lame exposition and lamer dialogue. There is no Harrelson or McConaughey to rescue this sh|t sandwich, instead we have Ali who I found simply bad - I just don't understand all the praising he gets for his performances. To me, his delivery is super uninteresting, pretty expected, somewhat wooden with zero sophistication - his range seems from A all the way to B and back. Basically all he has is one mode - solemn. Which has been worked to death by countless other mediocre actors. Sorry, the guy just isn't very good. But I guess opinions differ - beats me. Dorff is Dorff - a very utilitarian presence, with no layers - born to play an elevator attendant, and way out of his depth anywhere else. That's all ya got Nic? Yep, that's all ya got.
Waste of time as far as I can see. But people go bonkers over how "brilliant" this season is - when I hear this I wonder if I there isn't some candid camera hidden somewhere as a practical joke; I can't believe it. I guess that's why there's different strokes for different folks. This time more than ever YMMV.
