True 16:9 in SD?

This question may already have been answered but here it is again. Does this camera shoot true 16:9 in SD mode? I have had mine for a few days and i'm wondering if it only uses the whole chip in HD mode. I have had to set mine so that I have the SQU letters to the side of the lcd, so that is why I ask. Don't be cruel in the responses, I don't often ask questions that may have an obvious answer, but I just want to be sure.

Just a side note, Barry those bootcamp DVDs I got with my camera are great, very helpful and informative.

Yes it does true 16:9 in SD mode. "SQU" is short for "squeeze", a very unfortunate choice of name for the mode because it brings up reference to the DVX's squeeze mode (which, in the DVX, is digital stretching, but in the HVX it's actually native 16:9). Would have been nice if, instead of "squeeze", they'd just called it "wide".

Glad you liked the DVDs!

That is exactly what had me confused, those three little letters SQU. They really should change that in the upgrade. Thanks again.

Please excuse my ignorance, but what is true 16:9 classed as?

Is it the doing away with anamorphic strecting and the outputting of a different resolution source file?

Sorry if this seems like a very silly question, I'm trying to learn as much as I can. I though the only way to achieve16:9 with standard DV was to anorphically strecth it.

I think the concern goes back to the early days of 16:9, when not all cameras had native 16:9 sensors and derived the image by cropping and scaling an image captured with a 4:3 sensor.

Regardless of whether the sensor has a 4:3 or 16:9 shape, the image must be encoded at the same 720x480 or 720x576 resolution, because that's that SD DV25 mandates. For 16:9 video, the pixels are non-square (anamorphic).
