Ok. I just shot a feature using two dvx a's. The producer provided the cams and 60 Sony DV tapes. Yeah I know Sony is no good with the dvx. But they wouldn't make an exchange. Anyway, All the b cam footage turned out fine.
On set I periodically checked the a cam footage. It was playing back fine.
After the shoot, when I got the footage back to post everything from a cam plays back funky in the camera itself and my deck. I tried a few other decks and cams with the same results.
The footage plays very strangely. There is a lot of artifact and the timecode runs stuttery. The footage almost seems to be playing in slo mo, and the audio cuts in and out. Also, when I try to capture the bad footage FCP reports timecode breaks and will only capture seconds at a times.
I took several b tapes, played them in the a cam. They're fine.
I took a fresh tape, recorded with the a cam, and then played it back. Fine again.
I took one of the damaged a cam shoot tapes with room at the end. Recorded. It played fine.
I tried several different playback and camera settings on the camera. Finallly the damaged A footage played fine, but only on the a cam. I digid 2 of the a tapes no problem. I tried to start again today using the same method, but with no luck.
I've taken the camera in for repair, but does anyone have any thoughts on how to recover the bad footage?
Any guesses?
Thanks
jason
