Trouble with picture quality

In the second clip (interview) there is no artifact at all
its also zoomed way out and approached completely differently than youve approached your shot.

you cant compare an orange to an apple. no matter how hard you squeeze that orange, you aint gettin apple juice

don't want all of my video work to look like it was shot on SD with a Hi 8 camera from a mid nineties porn shoot.
even your very first post in this discussion looked better than that ; )

unless youre working for george lucas. i think you'll be alright.

just get some good lights, deploy them well, and plan your shots

You do know you can't just buy a new camera and expect the quality of your work to improve right? That takes practice, skill, and talent. If your work has not improved in quality over twenty years it is not going to improve with the purchase of a high definition camera. There is a reason there are film schools. There is a reason people shoot everyday. There is a reason their images look better than yours. If you can't get a great quality image out of this camera you need to get out of this field. Your focus still seems off, there are 3 focus assist options on the camera, spend some time (more than an afternoon) playing with them and learning them.

It was not the question of buying a new camera and expecting to be the president of the ASC but just some lighting and artifact issues.

As I said, my work is in photographic world. I do product shots and portrait work but the lights I use do not aid in video as I use strobes. Primarily, when doing print work I have no artifacts, only with low level concert shots with a high iso would I see these types of results.

Of course it takes practice, that is true but with an iso of 500 on this video camera versus 500 iso of my 1D or 7D, I am more inclined to use the 1d sometimes. Maybe I am just more acclimated to the DSLR since it is my work and videography is new to me.

Back to the topic:

In the clips you have linked compared to yours, they have more and or better lighting. Cameras eat light for a living, feed the beast. There are lots of resources available on the net, the stickies at the top of this heading are a good way to start.

Grant

Correction, I meant read the stickies in the lighting forum.

I would have filmed the interview closer then you did that way you have more detail and a cleaner image.... Also whats with that phucking terrible red back drop.... I know you couldn't do much about it but I find Red fill back grounds make video footage look yucky....

I have been shooting closer and with more light. YES!! I will avoid red because it does stink up the picture. It was the only location away from people and my judgement was off that day anyways.

Please let me know if this video is better. Please do not comment on the slow jitter in the beginning because that was a FCP error on my part.

I know the focus was off again so I am getting a monitor. It is interesting about the focus only because as a photgrapher, everything is manual including my focus and I am spot on even in low light shooting concerts but with the video cam I am not hitting the spot. Also I just got my Brevis MP2 which I will be trying out this week.

Thanks everyone for your input and assistance.

Cheers

Ed
