would a 501 be good if i have a pretty big set up with a 35 adapter and a monitor. it just doesn't seem like it'd be that strong. Thanks

a 501 can handle a basic 35mm kit. ive done it MANY times. is it optimal? probably not. but it will get you by. but that does depend on what all youre trying to put on it...

first question:
what kind of monitor are you using?

I own a 501 and it's a bit shaky for telephoto - seriously (some say its not a real fluid head, etc...).

i've been checking into them and i used one without any adapters or extras and it was fine but never used it again. so i'm kindof worried about like weight and how well it'll move. anyone have any options for a good tripod that not to expensive?

about the best under $1000 head id use is a manfrotto 510. 100mm bowl, good weight capacity and good movement for the money. wanna drop some more coin? i love the vinten vision 11.

for what its worth, i used a 501 with a zacuto/brevis/indifocus/100mm nikon/cavision mattebox and it worked acceptably well...

there has been some good talk about the libec products.

Extra weight on a 501 is a benefit from an operator perspective (or at-least for me). HVX'es are too damn light :-). From a camera safety perspective on a set it's not.

The 501 is an entry level head. It 's rated to support 13.2 lbs. I'd be really
suspicious if it was able to support that much weight and work efficiently. I own
one and it functions marginally at best with my older DVX100A and my HPX-170.

I have a 503 and a 516 as well. They are more efficient and can handle a bigger
load more efficiently. But I will tell you that I recently bit the bullet and purchased
a Sachtler FSB 8 system. UNBELIEVEABLE!!!

Good luck.

How are they with a smaller load? IE, 200a without adapter? Without monitor? Just camera? Is it too light, like the 501? Someone mentioned earlier, the HVX is almost "Too Light" on the 501. I agree. I've actually had better luck on light shots that I just needed stability (not worried about pans) with my 701.

Someone menitoned earler the Libec sticks/heads. The LS38 is a pretty sweet setup for well under a thousand....smaller yet, for the 22. B&H has a bunch of extras and packages to choose from with both.

well thanks everyone. I'm probably gonna check into a 516 cause that's what i've used before seems to work just fine. thanks again.
