Tripod

Hi, this is my first post here, to start things off my name is Newman and i am a snowboard videographer from Ottawa. I have been shooting for 4 years now and just purchased a DVX100b. Previously I have been shooting with a VX2k and have also had my hands on GL2's and VX1k's.

I have decided to start shooting with a tripd as much as possible opposed to freehanding it as i was previously have been. I realize that tripods make a much nicer shot in almost every situation. I shoot fast action and i need the most responses tripod for around $500 cnd. I currently own a Velborn Sherpa 750 with the Ph-157Q head. Ive been looking a many online as there isnt much selection in stores in Ottawa to try out. Could anyone suggest a system that would be the best for my type of shooting?

That Sherpa looks like a still cam tripod, no? I don't really have an answer for you if you're talking $500 for sticks AND a fluid head, but, WELCOME to the forums!

I can't speak for specific tripods, but I can sugest that you look at the Bogen-Manfrotto brand of tripods. They make decent tripods that don't break the bank.

Their range of legs, heads & other parts is prety much universally interchangable, so you can get the system to suit your needs.

They even have some very nice compact Carbon Fiber ones that would be great if you need to put them in your backpack for a day on the mountain.

Ditch that Velborn ASAP. It sucks.

anyone know if this would be a good system?

Hey Newman, I just purchased the 351mvb2 but with the 503 head from
B & H Photo. It costs just a little more but the 503 is a true fluid head where the 501 is not. Good luck !

I have the 501 head and the 755b legs. They have that adjustable bowl and the legs spread all over the place. I film on mountain sides and crazy terrain often so the bowl is quick and no spreader gives me versatility. You could get carbon fiber but big price difference I'm sure. The 501 also weighs less than the 503 and when hiking the hills, weight must be minimized! You're not in a studio so much advice won't be useful as they will be setting you up for heavy haulin. :)

hey newman I live near Ottawa as well save alitte more money and go for the 503 won't be sorry Ive bought cheap stuff and regretted it always after remember the saying you get what you pay for well its true . I Just bought a dvx100b and love it im only using it to tape hockey fights but love it looking to get more use out of it if your looking to get a second angle on you videos give me a pm . Im going to buy a cordless uhf lav mic setup so I can here the hockey fighter talking while the scrap should be cool . can't wait

Welcome Newman! You might try the Marketplace here where your $500. could go a bit farther and you could also visit the DVShop.ca site and join their list. Theya are a shop in Toronto and have a yahoo mailing every week with used gear being sold by folks who buy from them. They don't sell the gear just organize the classified.
If you are going to be shooting outside on the slopes and in the snow with a fluid head you may want to check into how the low temps will affect viscosity and drag, I kknow I had issues withmy Sachtlers when shooting up north (NWT) but then I had issues with all my gear up there ...it was cold!
