Tripod

Hey all

I know that for a full 35mm adapter rig you need a really good solid tripod that usually starts around $800 at the cheapest. But as of now, I am not able to spend that kind of cash nor am I anywhere close to having a full 35mm adapter rig.

That being said, I'm looking for a tripod substitute that can simply handle the job of holding up my HVX and 8" 1.9 lb External monitor. Maybe also a mattbox and shoulder mount? I am currently looking at the Davis & Sanford ProVista Airlift Tripod with Pneumatic Centerpost with FM18 Fluid Head & W3 Dolly at B&H for the price $209.95 and was hoping if anyone could give me a some input on whether or not this would work for me? Or if there are better tripods than this in the same price range of $200. Any help is much appreciated and again I know that eventually when I get a 35mm adapter rig going that I will need a much much better tripod. But for now I just need a cheap tripod that can support everything but a 35mm adapter. Thanks again.

Cheap tripods give cheap results. You're better off with a really good used one rather than a cheap new one if budget is tight, professional tripods are built to outlast several generations of cameras so they're usually good value used.

I have a Davis and Stanford tripod and I definately reccomend that you SAVE UP MORE MONEY. You'll regret buying it after it breaks on a shoot. It works alright, but I cannot recommend it especially if you'll be adding accessories later on.

Thanks guys. C2V that looks like a good deal on that manfrotto. I might be leaning towards it. Unless I should be getting the 503 head instead? Also how much room for add ons is there with the 501/351? I'm looking for something that will last me a while and has room for add ons.

In which case the 501/503 isn't what you're looking for. They're both extremely basic heads, barely adequate for just the bare camera. Add anything more and you'll find that it's much more than the setup can handle. Certainly not anything that'll last you for a while; you'll almost certainly be looking to upgrade before long.

Thanks Huy Vu. Then I guess what I really need to know is will the 501 or 503 / 351 be ok with just my HVX and 1.9 lb External monitor on it? Thats All I have for now and all I'll have for a while. Once I get a 35mm Adapter in the distant future then I will definately upgrade to a better tripod. But as of now I have no tripod at all and I just need something that I can put my camera and monitor on and that wont break anytime soon. Thanks again.
