Tripod

well one has a pan/tilt head... you can spend whatever you want on a tripod, or you can do a search and see that most will recommend you spend more. Cheap alternatives will be recommended like the Davis and Sanford thats around $200 and both bogen 501 and 503. I'd get the 503 or better. Its a $2500 camera, put it on something decent.

If its designed to hold the weight of your camera then I would highly doubt it. Its just not going to be much more useful than setting your camera on a table or a ladder... nor will it be easy to use or all that stable. and i wouldnt attempt any camera moves. Think of it this way - you know how nice of a camera your dvx is? And how easy it is to use and how its not frustrating to work with - thats what a nicer tripod ($1000+) is like. A cheap tripod is like trying to film a feature with an old 8mm video camera with onboard sound. You can do it, but its frustrating and will require unnecessary work arounds and probably turn out like crap.

man i gutta get out of the filming business so much money, and im 16 years old.....well im filming a wedding soon so ill get some quick money there, but seriously 500 bucks? hmmmmm

one questions

say i get a manfrotto, 150-200 bucks, can i buy one of those long, rectangle plates for a better base, and mount in on top of the tripod? or any tripod? does it help the camera?

If you can't afford to buy a decent tripod, I recommend renting something if you are hired to shoot a wedding. It makes all the difference in the world. A cheap tripod is ok if all you need are static shots - NO PANS, NO TILTS. And, yes... film/video is an expensive business/hobby.

For a camera the size of the DVX I would ONLY use one of those long rectangular plates so it doesnt snap off. And one made of metal at that. Thats going to be part of the tripod head - the other half is the legs. You can buy seperate or you can buy as a kit all together. Many are bowl-mounted - with bowl in the legs and a large ball that fits in the bowl on the bottom of the head. If you are that tight for a budget, you might want to look at the davis and sanford. it gets some decent talk here on the boards for its price (200). Also if you are doing a wedding, rcbrown(I think thats right) has a great thread on doing weddings. May even be a sticky somewhere, searching will turn it up.

ya i just made a nother thead guys, about weeddings lol, funny u guys mention it cuz i made it b4 i read this.........i have read rcbrown, its awsome, but i got one camera, so how shud i shoot it? ahhh just read the other thread lol

so ya, right now im using a shitty tripod, 80 bucks maybe, and the peice that screw into my camera is a little 2X2 square, (2 inches lol)

so i can just buy one of those long rectanglr plates an put it on?

so when i msearching for a tripod, wuts the weight limit i shud look for, so i can see if it will hold it right or not

Take into account yoru camera's weight and any future accessories you may add on; on board mic, rods, mattebox, et al

when you have a bunch of things that just weigh a little on your camera they end up weighing alot all together. I would be comfortable with the D&S you linked to. I wouldnt want to do more than locked off work with it though as I doubt its pan and tilt is all that smooth.
