Tripod to use with FS100

I currently shoot with a 5d mark II. I am going to be buying a FS100 in about a month or so. Was going to get a new tripod. But not sure what to get. Because I'm getting a camera my budget isn't going to be high for a tripod. I was thinking about the Sachtler Ace. But only supports 4kg.

I can get it for under 700 clams which is good.

I will be using the tripod with my 5d also so makes sense.

Finally I have a rail set. follow foucs, and will be buying a SmallHD DP6 also.

So if I rig out my fs100 it will be too heavy i think for the Ace?

Any suggestions?

I plan on buying an ace, even though I've been told not to (by salesmen who tried selling me $2000 tripods instead...... yeah right), but I need a lightweight tripod for the field and this fits into that category fine, I myself would just be running the camera and old FD lenses so about a MAX of 2.5kg. The guys I spoke to on the phone stressed to me about the legs that came with the Ace kit (which have a recommended pay load of 20kg.....) so I am not worried there at all, and I've heard reviews concerning the use of plastic... damn my whole tripod at the moment is made of plastic.... and I've been using it for 7 years (field tripod that is, not studio).

I'm willing to take on all these "risks", are you?

Which camera are you using?

And by taking the risk I probably will. But I can get a used manfrotto head and sticks for nearly the same price. But higher payload.

The FS100...

Higher payload generally means heavier tripod, which in turn, doesn't work out for me, hence why I am choosing the Ace.

I would maybe try to get a more heavy duty tripod used. The ace is great for a 5DMII, but with a fully loaded FS-100 you might be close to the weight limit with lens, rails, monitor etc.

I've been through cheap tripods to moderately expensive I suppose.

Currently I use my Sachtler FSB8, and I didn't start there.

I've gone through Manfrotto 701, 501, 504 and now my Sachtler.

If you plan on kitting up a bit the Ace might hit it's payload to quick
for you. It might be worth the couple dollars to go up in tripod if possible.
I've put some ridiculous weight on mine currently and couldn't be happier.
I specifically purchased it to not outgrow any time soon. It will hold 20lbs.

A higher end tripod can really give you piece of mind knowing it's not
going to bind or just give you jerky movements. Spending the couple dollars,
perhaps not a lot more for the step up in the line couple be worth more than
the cash it takes.

My tripod was an investment that I don't plan on making again. And if I do,
the 30+ pound rig that goes on it will be paying for the multi-thousand
dollar tripod :)

So my observation, buy with your total weight in mind and give some buffer
room. You will hit it, my poor 701 held 14lb's for a long time...even my 504
had troubles with that rig haha. Basically you will get heavier and it's nice
to not have to sell then rebuy if possible. Sometimes this is hard to do as I did
have to buy and rebuy but hey, if you can avoid it. Save the headache!

I have a libec RS250 which seems to work well. I much prefer it over the manfrotto i had before. I think an awful lot of these are built in the same places, there's definitely some added brand value going onto these tripods.

Stability and smoothness comes with a price: WIGHT (and a bigger price tag of course)

It´s a kind of natural law, you have to bite the bullet - there is no way around, but at least you cry only once.
After several tries, I ended up with a used Vinten 20 head and sticks, for the same price point as new (way lesser) Manfrotto.

I currently have a manfrotto 504.... not the happiest with it. It's simply OK, not great.

Debating moving up to either a vinten vision blue or a sachtler FSB6

Very happy with my Miller Compass 25 Solo with the carbon fiber legs. Rock solid, lightweight, adjustable height from 8.7" to 73.6", and holds a payload up to just over 30 lb. But as Frank put it, I cried once as this was the most I ever paid for a tripod.

Miller tripods are made 20mins from me and I got the factory tour and Compass demo, after which I bought their Compass 15 on CF Solo legs.

2yrs later I'm very happy with it, but now I'd look at their Compass 12, same specs less 2 drag positions and cheaper.

Cheers.
