Tripod Suggestion
spreaders do increase support, as they basically lock all three legs into one unit. I never take mine off, even in the dirt when your supposed to.  You can also get midleg spreaders for the 525, but they are a little less effective, but keep a little cleaner.
100% Correct. ;D

Also, a quick and dirty trick if you're stuck in the mud and you have to use a mid-level, but don't have one close by, thread a belt/rope/chain through the legs right underneath the first extension, that will keep the legs from coming apart until you can get back on solid ground. ;)

Re: Tripod Suggestion

Thanks for the 505 insight Rush. I've been looking everywhere for info/experiences with it, I have the 503 now, but want something heftier.

I have the 501 head and I don't know why you would ever need anything better than it. It works flawlessly with the DVX. I love it.

Re: Tripod Suggestion

yeah but slap on mattebox, flags, rods, followfocus, glass, mics, mounts, wireless, cables, etc and you're way too heavy for it.

Re: Tripod Suggestion

Kai sounds like you need some ARRI wheels :)

Anytime Kai, I wish you could get your hands on one to try it out, its love at first sight.

Re: Tripod Suggestion

Jared, Nice Arri geared head. It even looks lined up to the image plane marks for nodal moves. Too cool ! I'm looking at a Worrall head for my Arri 16SR, Hmmm wonder if I could mount my DVX on that ??

I use a combination of After Effects and Final Cut for video. (As well as photoshop, illustrator, etc)

Forget the 503 and buy a Vinten Vison3 head with a number 2 spring. It is to hell and gone better than any Bogen head, and since the 503 isn't exactly cheap I'd go for quality. The Vision3 head can be used with any camera simply by changing the spring...

Re: Tripod Suggestion

we used that to shoot a short a few months ago.. I dont own those wheels.. Rather buy a house for the money lol :)

as for the vinten.. yeah at $1000 for the head alone it better be good, which it is. there are a few better heads in that price range though.

For the money, 505 is one of the best heads out there, primarily due to its fluid smoothness and multi-spring system, allowing you to use cameras of different weights just as effectively in balance. It requires a 75mm bowl tripod though, since it has a 75mm ball that comes attached to it.
Compare it to a Vinten Vision3 and you won't say that anymore...

name one... I've used them all, and I have yet to find a better head for small cameras... in fact it's the first one I've been happy with for small cameras. Maybe I'm spoiled since I use a $6K Cartoni with our large cameras...
