Tripod Suggestion

I will be shooting numerous interior shots for a commercial builder. I need to provide shots that pan the room from above, about 7ft. above the floor.

Any suggestions for a tripod with center column that will fit the bill? Will I still be able to use a ball head? Here is what I was thinking:

Bogen 503 Head
Bogen 3246 tripod (89.4")!!
100MM BOWL INTERFACE 3114
100MM HALF BALL 3141BALL

Any help would be appreciated. I searched all over the forum, but found nothing specific to my needs.

Do you mean Bogen 3046? I have it and it's REALLY tall. People here swear by the 503 but I've got the 501 for the DVX and it provides very smooth pans and tilts, for much less than the 503. I'm not really sure what advantages the 503 has over the 501 for the DVX100 (which is a fairly light camera).

The 3246 goes a little higher than the 3046. I have read all of the 501 vs. 503 comments on this site. Panning and tilting will be the most critical shots for me, so I am going w/the 503. I would rather pay a little more for potentially better results. It's a personal decision.

Re: Tripod Suggestion

The main difference between the 501 and the 503 is, that the 503 is a real fluid head with fluid packages generating resistance, whereas the 501 uses "lubricated friction" to generate resistance, which means that there are practically two teflon coated surfaces that rub against each other.

These "lubricated friction" heads work quite well (I used a 505 or some time), but I just like the feel of a real fluid head better.

I just realized that the 3046 & 3246 are one in the same.

Do you have a ball leveler on yours? If so how does it work and do you like it? Thanks!

p.s. I'll most likely get the 503 & 3046 w/ ball.

Re: Tripod Suggestion

Hi doncsecz,
I'm actually looking for 503 or 501, depending on the price. If you can get me a good price I wouldn't mind buying it used from you. Please email me with your price, look for my email in the profile.

I should note that I'm based in Texas, so there would be no overseas shipping :)

Re: Tripod Suggestion

Hey,

I'm kinda shopping around for a second tripod and wanted to know if having a tripod height over 60 inches is important. How often have you guys needed to use a camera above that height? I have another tripod I can use for higher camera placement. Also how important are the spreaders? Does anyone know of a tripod with mid-level spreaders and ball leveler over 60 inches that sells for less than $1000 with a decent fluid head?

thanks

Re: Tripod Suggestion

90% of my shoots are at eye level, and the other 10% I would say 9.5% I go lower. I think I have only ran out of extension (on the 525 legs) once when I wanted to get over a bush, in which case I used 3 apple boxes that did the job.

the only time i needed to go that high is for a cobracrane shot.

Re: Tripod Suggestion

Are the spreaders just used to help place the spacing of the legs properly? Does it help give more stability? I've never used a tripod with spreaders so that's why I ask. Can you use the Bogen 525 without its spreader and will it be stable?

thanks

Re: Tripod Suggestion

spreaders do increase support, as they basically lock all three legs into one unit. I never take mine off, even in the dirt when your supposed to. You can also get midleg spreaders for the 525, but they are a little less effective, but keep a little cleaner.

Re: Tripod Suggestion

Do i need anything else aside from the 3046 and 503? Doesnt the 503 have a built in leveler? Why would I need the ball leveler?

Is the 525 much better then the 3046? How?

Re: Tripod Suggestion

built in leveler? not sure what that is but the 525 legs you need the ball for the 525. There is actually a 525/503 kit that is alot cheaper then buying them all seperate, and you get a free bag.

Dont buy the 3046, the 3046 is a photographic tripod not a video tripod.

For the money, 505 is one of the best heads out there, primarily due to its fluid smoothness and multi-spring system, allowing you to use cameras of different weights just as effectively in balance. It requires a 75mm bowl tripod though, since it has a 75mm ball that comes attached to it. So a 3046, 3246, 3221, 3021 will not work. You will need something like a 525MVB (not 515MVB, that's the 100mm).
