Tripod question!

I am in the market for a tripod. I wanted to know how important it is to follow the maximum load rating for the legs are. I am looking to purchase a set of legs that's maximum weight load is roughly 5-7 lbs shy of the weight I plan on putting on it. Money is an issue and do you think that these legs combined with maybe sandbags to hold it down will be sufficient for the weight I plan on putting on them?

legs I am looking at: Bogen / Manfrotto 351MVB2K
legs that I would like if I had more money: Bogen / Manfrotto 525MVB

what I will be putting on the legs: Kessler 8ft crane, 503HDV head, and HVX200

When you are using a crane/jib on your tripod, you should *really* have OVER-speced legs - and all other parts for that mater. Using under-sized parts is asking for trouble.

That's a heck of a lot of nice gear you'd be risking for, what? a couple of hundred bucks for cheaper legs? Not worth the risk.

I'm inclined to agree w/mikko.

I'm inclined to agree w/mikko.

I have the 351MVB2 w/503 head (not HDV) and use it to support my HVX, though I don't think I'd trust it enough to hold the weight of a crane. I'd recommend getting something stronger/sturdier (and envy you all the while).

i have the 8' kessler and you're going to ruin that 503 head pretty quickly. you have to also consider that you'll have about 10lbs of counterbalance weight plates and possibly mics, lens adapters, monitors or other accessories at some point - all adding weight.

i prefer the 526 head. id also sugest the 3193 legs - hey, thats exactly what andrew suggested above!
