Can I take a tripod on a plane as a carryon? What about the HVX and other accessories? I have a really tight window for boarding a flight home from a shoot next week so I'm trying to take a very minimal setup all as carryon to avoid checkin time.
I've never tried to carry on a tripod. But I'm sure it all depends on the size of the airplanes you will be flying on. You will have to put it in the overhead compartment so if they are too small- than you will run into an issue. I always carry my camera and accessories with me on the plane. I have a Kata backpack that does a good job of allowing me to carry everything. I than carry a briefcase for hard drives and other items.

Thanks. The reason I ask about the tripod is that I thought I had read that someone had had a problem with getting a tripod on the plane due to security concerns over the spikes on the feet.
I have carried my Miller 10 on planes before though I prefer to check it in a hard case and have it double to carry clothes on short trips and add extra protection. If you do carry it on it's best to have it in some sort of sleeve. I don't know about your tri-pod but mine looks like Tony Montana's little friend when I sling it over my shoulder. It's caused one or two double takes from security guards and cops, so it's best to be very sensitive of that in airports.
Just remember, if you check your tripod and the airline loses it, you are S.O.L. I never fly with my Sachtler, I take a Bogen. If the airline loses it, I am only screwed out of four or five hundred dollars instead of thousands of dollars.
The best way to do this is to jut FedEx or UPS everything, then if they lose it or it's damaged, as long as you took their insurance, you are covered. Of course, if you are flying to multiple locations in a row, that can be tough, that's why I recommend a cheapo POS tripod when you fly. I hate shooting with my Bogen but it was cheap.
I've always carried mine through security, and then let them check it at the gate, like they do with baby strollers, that way you don't have to let it go through baggage claim, it's waiting for you when you step out of the plane!
