Not sure how much of this has been discussed before but I have been a news photog going back to the film days. In my end of it you are always moving. The weight of the equipment really adds up. (ENG Cam 15 to 20 lbs, battery belt 15 lbs, light kit 30 lbs, tri pod 20 lbs, etc.) Each day takes a little toll on the back. Because of this I am obsessed with equipment weight. Also lighter equipment means thinking about the shot more and the logistics less. The newer carbon fiber tri pods have amazing stability for the weight. Your choice depends on your type of shoot. A lot of production moves with time for setups, go solid, fluid head with less consideration to weight. If mobility is important consider the lightweight carbon fiber with a fluid like head.

I have a Gitzo G1127MK2 carbon fiber. It weighs 2.8lbs and is as steady as a rock. I put the Gitzo G2380 "fluid head" on it which brings the overall weight to just around 6 lbs. I can do all but the most difficult moves with it and at that weight it allows me to use the tri pod more of the time because of so little hassle.

Cost for the setup should total about $550.

well i went to evs today and checked out there tripods and realized ****...im gonna need a big head because im getting the m2 so ill prolly end up with a 516 bogen head and 3142 legs...pretty sweet setup...way more than i wanted to spend around 1170 prolly buy it tomo or something

For those of us not getting an M2 adaptor and just using an HVX with a matte box, what is good on the low end. Are the Vinten pro 5 or 6 any good? I really want to stay near the $500 or slightly more range for legs and head.

I've been using a ProMaster SHD for my JVC HD100U. It has a 15.5lbs load capacity. So far have no complaints. I paid $110.00 for it brand new.

There is a review up on the Focus in the articles section, go check it out. If you can afford it its the best under $1000 head out there right now, hands down.

The bogen 501 and 503 are too small for the HVX... you gotta go bigger.

yes by far.. and the spring is adjustable to go upto 20lbs. Seriously, you gotta go try that head out.

Tempting, but still 1750$ for the package is a lot of money. I wonder how manfrotto tripod kits in 600$-1000$ range will compare with cartoni (100mm ball of caurse, for fair comparison).

like I said it is realy tempting, it sure looks like a great deal, but considering the money range I would still like to see the focus next to something like manfrotto wich I trust. Because even at 1150$ for me to justify the price has to be somehow better then a manfrotto at the exact price wich has legs (better legs I presume), spreader etc... including bag. :) And that's what I will do with the first chance, just my thoughts.

hey Andreas,

THis means you are trying to compare F101 kit from cartoni with 516 head from Bogen (manfrotto).

If 503 is not recommended from HVX,you are struck then with the 516 which can handle HVX well.

Except now you will be paying over $800 for 516 Kit.

The question is whether the $400 different is worth it between F101 1-stage focus and Bogen 516 head with 3182 legs. You can also pay $1000 for better legs for 516 head.

I am really tempted to get the F101. I wonder what's the weight of the Cartoni focus in comparison to 516 kit? What about flight?

I would suggest NOT going with Bogen. In my limited experience, they are nice and light weight but aren't all that well made and a real pain to keep level.

I have never had a problem with the bogens and I think the 516 would do just fine. The Cartoni is great --- the Porsche in this price range. But not everyone needs the Porsche. Putting the extra $400 towards a nice lens to slap on that M2 might yeild an overall better result. My advice would be to spend your money where it will have the most impact on the screen.

Does anyone know if the manfrotto 503 head is ok to use with the m2??

The 503 is not enough head for that set-up. It handles a DVX and follow focus okay, but the HVX is much heavier --- it makes the DVX feel like a toy by comparison.
