Tripod Help!

Hello everyone. I have a few quick questions. Im buying manfrotto 055XB legs and have a question. How wide is the plate that the head sits on? where the thread is attached to. I was thinking of taking a Weifeng 717 tripod head on putting in on the manfrotto legs, not because the head is cheaper, just because I like it better then the 501 and 701. Should I have a problem of the head not lockign onto the tripod? hopefully everyone understands what im saying. I mostly just need the diameter of that silver plate that the head rests on.

Don't worry about the diameter of the top plate. If you other head takes a 1/8"-16 threaded mount, you should be fine.

hahaha okay, thanks for the help. but do you think it would be a problem with the head coming loose because there is really no locking mechanism from the head to the legs? kinda like there are on the manfrotto heads.
 
The Manfrotto legs have a couple of setscrews that run up through the plate from underneath, that you tighten with an Allen wrench to lock the head on and prevent it from turning. These are in addition to the main 3/8-16 stud that holds the head on. The system should work with any tripod head as long as it has a reasonably flat base.

hmm okay. what would you guys reccomend for a t3i setup with a rode mic and tamron 17-50 and possibly an 85mm soon. a 701 or a 501 head?
