tripod grease/lubricant

My tripod has dried itself out shooting in a humid tropical environment, becoming logged with salt and sand. I cleaned it out and put in some grease but it was absolute **** and makes it impossible to do slow seamless panning and tilting and has become problematic for me. What kind of grease should i use for it first of all, and is the mechanical grease stick i used last time gonna pose future problems for my gear???

I'm looking for the same thing, since I also have a sand problem from shooting atop the giant sand dunes in Death Valley.

My pan makes a coarse sound, and I want to clean it and replace it with the right stuff. A motorcycle friend said that a lube called "Lithium" or something would work. Any ideas?

I am not sure I would try to grease a fluid head. Maybe send it back for a rebuild.

But look into some gun greases for something that will not attract excess grit. Lithium is one.

I would suggest a silicone based grease, if you can find it. Its non-oil based and won't react with the synthetic materials inside the tripod. Try looking at a marine supply store, the grease you find there will most likely be specially formulated for just such a salty/sand environment. Other than that, contact the company who makes your head to see if you can get some of the grease they use, or like Galt said, send it in for a rebuild...

its called white lithium

its called white lithium

That stuff saved my ass down there, though hard to find in the 3rd world, it was exactly what i needed. Too bad i can't properly re-assemble my fluid head the way it was before.
