I am looking for a good tripod to go with my DVX100b. I am new to making movies but I am willing to invest in a good piece of equipment. Dont want to spend more than $600. any ideas?

I've heard good things about the Libec LS-38 which is very close to your price range. I hear it's better than the 503 HDV set up, perhaps someone else can chime in on that one.

I have a Libec LS38-2a and its rock solid. Only drawback is that its fixed drag but its real nice to use the way it is without having drag settings anyway.
I have played with a mates 501 and 503 and although these have adjustable drag settings, I believe my Libec feels that little bit nicer, more fluid and constant.

The legs are solid as they get, has nice solid floor spreader, I don't think there is a better pod on the market at this price level.

Educate yourself before you start a big shopping list. Learn about gear for real first hand. Go into a production rental business and ask lots of questions. Don't buy anything you wouldn't want to rent. Everything from tripods and other camera support gear find out first. Learn about lights, grip, location audio, then focus on making a few shorts with rented equipment.

Then you'll look back on all the gear recommendations you get and know for yourself what type of stuff is absolute crap and what is a wise investment.

I bought the slightly smaller Libec LS22 fluid head on the T68 legs. I like it a lot. The drag setting feels well suited for my DVX100A. I got the three stage legs with mid-spreader, large feet and a "free" remote zoom for something like $490 delivered. Zotz Digital had the best price.

I was going to go for a Libec LS38-2A myself, bud decided to go with the more expensive Miller SOLO DV system instead because the sticks suited my needs better (spreaderless and can get down real low - good for all situations that I usually shoot in)

You won't go wrong with the Libec though - just be aware that the 2a has a floor-level spreader. The 2M has a mid-spreader which is nicer on uneven terrain.
Here's a review on it anyways :)
