You need a thin filter in order for the lens hood to fit. I'm using a Schneider (B+W) slim on my EX-3.
The Soom is an excellent choice. I like the Sachtler FSB-6 head (which is what I would recommend). We have others who are partial to other heads, but I just happen to like the combination of the sliding plate and the counterbalance dial. Don't recall the rig Phil Bloom used for his monitor but you might want to take a look at some of the Zacuto rigs.

Just so you know, I was going to order the SOOM as well. It's a really cool setup! But after I added up the weight of all the additional items (Red Rock Matte Box, Letus Ultimate 35mm adaptor, Nikon Lens, Zacuto Rails, higher capacity battery, etc...) the weight more than doubled. We ended up purchasing the Sachtler DV-8SB-SL (part #0850). Check it out on B&H for the details.
Of course if we didn't plan on all these camera add on's we would have went with the SOOM.
