tripod advice

Hey all,

I've been scouring the web trying to find out what tripod is right for me, and it's tough getting information. There is so much to consider, so many price ranges, but not a lot of it is explained for newcomers. After a few hours of research, I believe a Bogen 503 head fits my budget and will provide what I need. But I'm not sure what sticks are best. I'll be doing rugged field shooting for a month in Sri Lanka. I don't want to go over $600 total cost for the tripod, and the 503 head is around $300.

Does anyone have any testimonials with the DVX100B on a Bogen 503? And what sticks should I look at?

i am wondering the same thing as him, and....

why the hell are tripods so expensive? I mean i see some waaay up in the thousands, costing more than a brand new DVX!
Does it really cost that much to manufacture these sticks and joints?
Just like does it really cost $10,000-$90,000 (retail) to manufacture a professional camera??

Yeah that is the same one I was considering at EVS, but here it is $30 cheaper, comes with the quick release plate included, and a free laptop case. However, I still don't feel confident in my knowledge of tripods, if this is the right one for what I need or if it is simply the only one in my price range...

wow $300 more for two-stage sticks? Well thanks for the help, I'll be ordering sometime soon.
