Trigger recording on the Ki Pro Mini?

I'm DPing a short on the 17th and 18th. I'm supplying my AF100A and the producer wants to rent a Ki Pro Mini. I've never used an SDI recorder before. Does the Ki Pro Mini have some sort of feature that triggers recording if I'm also recording internally?

The other thing I wanted to know is whether or not the Mini auto-detects the input signal. Is there some setting (on either recorder, cam, or both) that I need to tend to so I can record a 24p signal?

Also, now you guys will finally see some of that pseudo 10bit. Hopefully it'll be color banding free! Thanks for any help in advance.

I'm not pushing one over the other, but the Atomos Samurai does all of the above, so I'd be quite surprised if the Ki Pro Mini did not. My suggestion is to simply call AJA. In my experience, their tech support is responsive and friendly.

f44876,
Yes, with up-to-date firmware, the AJA Ki Pro Mini may be triggered by the Panasonic AG-AF100 series cameras. If you are not familiar with the operation of the AJA Ki Pro Mini, please consider thoroughly reviewing the operation manual prior to your shoot. The manual is available in PDF form from the AJA website here:
http://www.aja.com/assets/support/files/66/en/AJA_Ki_Pro_Mini_Manual_v4.1.pdf

You have a few options with the Ki Pro Mini for triggering the recording. If you are using record run timecode on the Panasonic camera, you can elect to simply set the TC In in the Ki Pro Mini CONFIG menu to SDI RP188. This will take the timecode embedded in the SDI output from the camera (if the camera is appropriately configured). Then you set the Arm Recording menu parameter in CONFIG to TC/REC KEY. When the camera timecode is detected as incrementing, the Ki Pro Mini will go into record and stop when the camera stops. Be aware that this method is only viable for record run timecode as freerun timecode does not start/stop and just increments endlessly.

The second choice is to keep the TC In set to SDI RP188, disable the Arm Recording for TC/REC KEY and instead select PANA AF100 in the Camera Data menu parameter. This parameter is useful when you want to arm recording and you are using freerun timecode on the camera. This feature is specific to the camera as it relies on the SDI ancillary data to detect start/stop from the camera.

Finally, while the Ki Pro Mini will indeed auto detect the incoming video format and frame rate, you may need to review the camera settings on the Panasonic AG-AF100 series camera as they tend to default the SDI output to disabled and if enabled to 1080i output when you are recording internally to 1080p 23.98. On page 110 of the Panasonic AG-AF100 manual, be sure to take note of SDI Out and SDI 24PsF. Both of these should be set to ON. You may find the PDF of the camera manual on the Panasonic website here:

If you are unsure what the AJA Ki Pro Mini is receiving as a signal, simply press the STATUS button and it will denote the incoming video format and frame rate as well as the record format.

As a reminder, only use qualified CompactFlash cards with the Ki Pro Mini. A list of qualified cards may be found here:

Absolutely! I'll most likely post some side by side screenshots some time after the shoot as I'll be recording internally as a backup.
