Tried to hack GH1, now it won't work

I attempted to do the hack on my gh1 the other day from this thread:

http://wiki.eoshd.com/index.php/Beginners_GH1_Custom_Firmware_Guide

I tried to follow the steps from the thread on dvx ptoolforbeginners but it leaves out so many details, I'm wondering it's even a sticky.

Ok, now back to the hack I applied:

I applied the 1.33 firmware update and now it won't playback and freezes. I replugged my gh1 back into my computer and deleted the file but it's still freezing after I scroll through a couple of pictures/videos.

Is there a way to restore it to factory settings?

I hate to complain, but users who don't possess the hardcore technical knowledge with DSLRs shouldn't even attempt the hack. The instructions for how its done are ridiculously vague and leave more questions and answer none.

I've been lurking all over this site and the other filmmaking realms on the net and haven't found a simple walkthrough explaining this process(like the yellow book "how to hack your gh1 for dummies)" or even a youtube video.

I guess I'm in over my head, I don't even know how to check the version number on this thing and felt like ranting/venting.

Anyone else having issues with this?

if you applied your hack correctly with version increment and version compare checked you can just load the original v1.32 firmware. One tip, use a card reader. how exactly is it freezing?

It's freezing when I go into playback, I scroll 4 files to the left or right and then freezes. I turn it off, it's still frozen. I leave it alone for a couple of minutes and it's still the same way. I have to take out the battery to restart it when it does that.

I bought this camera a while ago, I think in May/June so I think my camera should have the previous version that allows the hack to work.

If you place the original Panasonic 1.32 firmware on your card, it should ask when going into playback if you want to install that firmware, before you can view any pictures.

Ok heres the latest update:

I tried to reapply the hack, I followed the instructions from the thread xocomil posted.

The camera freezes everytime I turn it on and when I plug it into my computer, the computer isn't recognizing it so I can't access the videos on my card.

Anyone have advice? Is the camera destroyed?

I'm so frustrated right now I want to put this camera behind my truck and back over it a few times.

Good to see the master is out, thanks for stopping by Vitaliy.

I'm thinking I might just have to cut my losses and move on.

 DO WHAT SOMEBODY ELSE SAID AND USE A CARD READER!!!!!!!!!

Use a new SD card WITHOUT pictures or video on it!!! DO NOT try to update anything else except ticking the first two boxes, so your firmware is VER. 0.0

AND TO DO THAT, you need to re-run Ptool and select a higher version to start with. (you said you changed from 1.32 to 1.33..... so try to use 1.34 or 1.35)

Another Update(not giving up yet):

Just plugged in the card in the card reader, I can see the video files on fcp7 log and transfer but the video files outside of fcp7 are invisible(when I'm browsing the card).

By a random stroke of luck, I actually do have a card reader that is compatible. My card is a Class 10 san disk ultra.

The first time I tried the hack, I had a couple of pictures on the card and maybe one video.

There were no instructions on this forum that I found(scourged the stickies for this) and it doesn't state to start with ver 0.0

They all basically state you can jump right in with 1.33 without any instructions on prepping for it.

I've tried to update it once after the first broken hack, so I'm on my 2nd version so the next time I try to do the fix it'll be 1.34

STOP TALKING ABOUT YOUR VIDEO!!!!

Using the Hack for Dummies:

1. GET A NEW SD card.
2. Get the firmware from the Panasonic site:
http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/download/fts/index.html

3. Follow the instructions from this site
4. Use Ver. 1.32 and try Ver. 1.35 as the output)
5. Tick only the first two boxes to get the default easy to re-hack Ver. 0.0
6. Copy this onto your new SD card
7. Load this.

Instructions on this forum:
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?212263-Ptool-for-beginners-Ptool-FAQ

You use Ver 1.32 as a start for your firmware. You must choose a later Ver to load (e.g. Ver. 1.33 )

The reason you do this is because IF your current is Ver 1.32, and you name it Ver. 1.32, it will NOT load the same or earlier version.
When you run PTool, if you tick the first two boxes, it will tell your GH1 to report Ver. 0.00 (or maybe 0.01). So if you decide to load the ORIGINAL Ver. 1.32 back on, it is later than 0.01, so it can load.

You have probably been tryign to load a newly hacked Ver. 1.33, after you have ALREADY loaded Ver. 1.33 on it, so it will NOT let you do it!!!!

Is there a way to restore it to factory settings?
To restore your camera back to factory settings, you need to reinstall the GH1_132.bin firmware file that you downloaded from Panasonic's website. If you checked the second patch in PTool ("Prevent version compare") when you created your GH1_133.bin patch, you should be able to reinstall GH1__132.bin. To do so, format an SD card with the camera, then copy GH1_132.bin to the SD card. Turn the camera off, insert the SD card, turn it on, then press the Playback button on the camera. The camera should then offer to update its firmware with the file on the SD card. Once this update has finished, it's a good idea to verify that the camera has been restored back to factory settings.

I'm sorry you had the unfortunate experience of discovering first-hand many of the hazards involved in using PTool. For more information on obtaining reliable results from PTool, you may find the link in my signature helpful.
