Tricks & Tips

I was just wondering what sort of tricks, tips or scene settings people have learned using their HMC150 and if they would like to share them.

Here's a few quick tips for the HMC150:

1) Turn up the detail coring (setting within a scene file) to avoid noise issues.
2) Black balance whenever you turn on the camera or change recording formats. Again... to avoid noise issues in the blacks.
3) Learn to use manual focus. The auto focus on the HMC150 (especially on the wide end of the lens) seems to focus on the background, leaving the shot looking very soft.
4) Learn to use the waveform and zebras- You get some nice professional tools with the HMC150, so it's to your advantage to learn to utilize them with every shoot. I like keeping my zebras at 70 (to gauge proper exposure of skin) and 100 to detect blown out areas in frame.

Just a few to get the discussion started...

+1 for the detail coring, it really helps out to get rid of some of the noise!

The master ped can also prevent some noise, I usually have it at -3 and the detail coring at + 2. I've noticed that if you crank the detail coring to much it won't just ignore some of the noise but also thel detail at the high frequency areas.

About the black balance, I've never done that, I just shoot at 5.6k when I'm outside, are you able the set the black balance while shooting in that preset- and how do you set it BTW?

You are probably looking for "tweaking" setups etc. but humour an old guy with some little things that can make a difference.
Leave the microphone ALC off and make your audio post more manageable and work with an audio person whenever you can. When you can't wear good headphones and watch your levels as well as your framing.
Get a 72mm clip on lens cap for your camera, the stock lens hood cover picks up dust and if you use a mattebox you will need one anyway.
I bought one of these and I think that having a really soild base plate on the camera just makes you feel more comfortable with other add ons like rails systems and such. I have no attachment to the company , but it is a good product made by a shooter.

I always carry a Ziplock "BigBag" in my kit and back pocket when shooting in case of rain, sand, dust and dirt.

coring really only helps if you have your detail set on the + side of things. I usually have my detail dialed down a few and also the chroma level dialed down. this will help reduce some noise as well.

Yes, you can adjust the black balance while using 5.6k preset. So, you should do that occasionally.
