Travelling uninsured

Hey guys,

I have the chance of traveling abroad this year and I'm thinking of taking most of my equipment along with views to possibly relocate. The travel expenses are high, so I'm thinking of going uninsured. I've got two pelican cases filled with equipment: a 1510 and a 1650, plus a miller DS10 tripod, so it's not a huge amount of gear, but it's heavy and expensive. I was first thinking of taking my old VX2000 ( I still might ), but then I figured I wouldn't be able to use any of the footage I will shoot over there for my HD showreel .... Also I think a real filmmaker should be willing to take chances and go anywhere with his equipment.

Any words of advice? Going from Australia to various parts of south america ( I speak spanish fluently )

So what happens when you arrive in Chile on day 1 and your camera was broken in transit?

On the other hand, how would you even be able to fix it WITH insurance until you got home?

The 1510 is small enough that you can take it with you on the plane. The rest is basically cables, adapters, batteries, microphones. Everything is padded inside but I realize customs could still manage to break something ( it's their job isn't it? ;) ). I guess it's the risk you take. News crews do it all the time though, with much more expensive cameras in some cases. Then again, they are insured....

I took all my equipment to New Orleans two weeks ago. My GH1 went into a backpack with my laptop under my seat. My DVX100 went in the overhead compartment (and my DVX bag has all the accessories with it in the one bag). The only thing I check was my tripod and my external hard drive, both of which were in a plain suitcase, and I used my clothes as padding. Arrived in New Orleans with all my equipment, but some wrinkled clothes. Going back, I wanted more legroom, so I check my GH1 in my suitcase (in its original box and packaging) plus wrapped that box in clothes.

BTW, they couldn't break any of my equipment, but my electric razor was completely in pieces when I opened the suitcase at the hotel. Thank god for that, but really???
