Traveling with DVX100B

I am flying to the Caribbean and plan to take my DVX100b, shotgun Mic, cables , and my Nikon D50, on board the plane with me. Is there anything I should know about. If I have to check them in I would but I rather keep them with me. Oh Yea am I allowed to take footage while flying? I am going with a group and I would like to film them while traveling if possible.
Thanks
Matt

Your best bet would be to contact your airline and find out exactly what their policy is. A lot has changed in the carry on world recently, so checking with the airline will save you a lot of speculation.

I've traveled with my 100A for over a year now. Going back and forth from/to Chicago and New York, and several times to England and the Middle East. I always keep it in my soft case bag, which protects it enough. ALWAYS bring that damn thing as a carry on. Put all your other stuff you need for the plane inside your camera bag, if thats the case. Bottom line is, if you plan to shoot out there, and god forbid something happens, your done.

That's my advice. Neverh ad problems going through scanner/xray machines. This goes along with miniDV tapes too. This day and age if they are running laptops through there...

Hope that helps!

Matt,

I was recently visiting with friends and I asked these same questions. The wife is a flight attendant with American Airlines. She said no filming in the plane. I'm starting a documentary which will take me to Morocco next year and I also wanted some footage in the plane, but I guess it may not be possible. As it gets closer to when we leave, I plan to call the airline as Chris suggested to see what the limitations will be. Normally, I adhere to the "make them ask you to stop rather than ask," but I'm admittedly a little chicken on this one.

Flights to/from the UK are super tough on this right now. Anyone managed to get both a laptop bag and camera bag as carry on to/from the UK? I will be flying with both to London in two weeks. No way am I checking either!

I've flown quite a few times with my camera and I've never really had a problem. If I want to get footage from take off and landing, I usually put away my bag and just hold onto my camera and I try not to make a big deal about it.

I travelled from Wisconsin to Moscow and back again with no problems. I went through X-ray at least a dozen times with no ill effects to camera, MP3 recorder, or media. Of special note though, I do have a Pelican case for the camera and sensitive gear, and it was only under the plane once for a brief flight. However, everything travelled well and in perfect condition. Good luck!

Make sure your batteries are charged and you can turn the camera on and show them it works. I travel constantly with mine and don't have any problems. Be polite and accomodating and to repeat call ahead and get the policy of your airline. Also arrive early for your flight and go through security with enough time on your hands to implement the plan"b" that you have already prepared if they say no.

If you're bringing your lap top, make sure you can get it out easily. Airport security always wants you to take the computer out and run it through the X-ray machine separately. They may also ask you to take the camera out and run that through separately too. Bring a battery and tape along so you can power it up and run some tape through to prove it really is a camera if they ask (99% chance they don't). I usually bring some basic equipment too so I can shoot even if they lose my luggage.

No risk.

I would not ask for a permission to shoot during the flight. Many tourists shoot video & stills during the flights, as long as you do it like a tourist all the flight personel can do is to ask you to stop if shooting is not allowed. Just play dumb. During the take-off and landing the use of all electric devices (also wristwatches?) is forbidden, you might be able to shoot thru the window but do not stand up...
