Traveling with a DSLR on a plane

How do you all travel with your DSLR on a plane? Carry on? Or do you check it in?

Have anyone of you sent your equipment by email in advance?

Carry it on. Checked bags get delayed a lot of the time and it will likely get scrutinized/manhandled by TSA agents. I use a medium sized Lowe Slingshot bag, and it is perfect for air travel as long as I don't need a ton of gear.

Always carry-on - Keep the camera safe! I've traveled around US and Canada for trade shows and typically bring at least 2 camera bodies and a few lenses. Usually in a camera backpack that JUST fits in the overhead. Even with all the extra lenses, monitors, rails systems and other accessories the security at most airports doesn't have any issues - if that was a concern. I've also just carried my camera around my neck via the standard strap if that's more your style. However, I've never sent my camera via email in advance... ;)

I'd love to figure out how to send equipment via email ;D

Never check anything you can't easily replace... always carry it on.

For tripods and other equipment, detach the head. Seems like everything is designed to fit in large luggage you can check in. The camera and glass carry on.

I usually put my camera and lenses in carry on. And I always get travel insurance, even if I'm only travelling domestically, and I always triple check that I am covered for the amount required to replace all my gear if required.

With travel insurance, I'm far less stressed about my gear on the way home than the way there (because a mishap on the way there means I might miss footage, but on the way home it means I get a new camera!).

I always carry on. No issues really.

One time a part on the head of a slik tripod that holds the quick release on broke off in a checked bag, but that was a $15 dollar part, no other mishaps.

I travel to New Zealand and back and I carry two 17" laptops, two lacie harddrives, two cameras one is HVX200a and the other is a DLSR, lens, batteries, sound mic. I have a small case with wheels and a camera bag.
