Traveling (airplane) with gear...tips?

I've got a few shoots coming up that I'd be flying to and this will be my first time flying with gear. Looking for suggestions when traveling with gear. I imagine that my bag of tripod, slider, 2 led lights, light stands, extension cords, etc are over 100 lbs. Do you usually check just two bags of gear?

I send my tripod/bag in luggage but the cameras and laptops are carry on. As for cords etc... I just get them where ever I'm heading to. I like to travel as light as possible.

Any reason why you can't rent certain things when you get to your destination?

i tried to fly an 80lb light kit a few months ago and the airline wanted $400 one way to check it.
so if you can set things up in 2 or 3 smaller cases. that would be FAR cheaper.

another thing people do is SHIP their gear (with a fedex or ups level company) ahead of them to the destination. that can be a LOT cheaper as well as (based on some peoples stories) more reliable
