Travel Recommendations

Hey there,

I'm doing an international doc-style shoot with 2 hvx's. I've got a kit with hardcases and all sort of accessories like monitors, batteries, filters, extra cables, chargers, firestores, lenses, FRS radios, and a zacuto handheld rig. Any recommendations for International shoots? We're going to Germany, Dubai, India, China, and Australia.

Our normal travel package consists of two very large pelican cases. One for the camera and one for accessories. A Rock n' Roller cart. Sticks. Cinebag for our second camera.

We want to make sure we don't run into any customs roadblocks. Any known restrictions on Switronix batteries or using FRS radios?

Any ideas or tips?

Thanks,
Howie

When I went from Finland to Germany one week ago, they told me to tape the contacts of the HVX Lithium Ion batteries at the security check.

My tip would be carry on your cameras and P2 cards, do not ever check them or better yet, ship the rest of your gear FedEx freight. The hassle of navigating airports post 9/11 with lots of gear has become a nightmare, thefts and mis-routed baggage are way up. I used to routinely fly with a crew of five and 16 Anvil cases of gear, we did a trip across America. It took four Rock and Roller carts and two mini vans but it worked out great. Those days are over. That same shoot in today's travel would be an absolute nightmare. Going international just exacerbates it.

I recently did a two week shoot all over the U.K. and carrying a backpack with my Powerbook, HVX, four batteries, six hard drives, eight P2 cards, iPod, wireless mics, all of the adapters, cables, etc. resulted in a 64lb load for my back. Bearable but not comfortable. I shipped the tripod and packed some rain gear, etc. in my suitcase. Unless you are bringing LED small lightweight lighting, I would rent a kit wherever you are shooting, if possible. It's nice to leave your Arri kit at the rental house each time you change countries.

great advice puredrifting - im going to have to look into shipping our gear. The plan was always to carry on the camera and drives, but shipping might just be the way to go for the other gear. Wouldn't be surprised if it's cheaper too.

Thanks,
Howie
