Travel Advisory

FYI - new proceedure at the airport security lines: remove your video cameras for inspection, same as if it's a laptop. Started yesterday morning.

Re: Travel Advisory

Got caught in this on the 13th. In addition, they want all video tape removed and placed in a tray. You have to be careful when it comes out the back, so it doesn't tumble if you can't get their quick enough. They also want tennis shoes off now.

Strange part? I got this in Phoenix, but not at JFK in NY. All they wanted was the laptop removed. At Heathrow, they didn't even want the laptop removed...

Maybe Phoenix doesn't have as fancy equipment as the other airports and therefore needs more manual screening?

Re: Travel Advisory

All I know is that the poor bastard who has to take off and inspect my shoes isn't getting paid NEARLY enuf!!!! That qualifies as hazardous duty.

Re: Travel Advisory

..i cant help but question why much larger potential terrorist targets such as ocean ilners, and cruise ships havent adopted any sort of similar security screening pattern yet.

next thing we'll have is some royal carribean cruise go down in the middle of the ocean, and everyone will be looking shocked like "oh my goodness.. we forgot about those?.. i guess we never thought about that!"

Re: Travel Advisory

i went on a cruise last december ('03), and they actually did have similar screening. They checked bags when boarding with x-ray machines (cant remember if I took off my shoes tho), and every time you disembarked for shore they checked your ID (ships ID) and checked it again as well as used an x-ray when you got back on. This was RCI (royal caribbean).

That would be bad? ;)

Re: Travel Advisory

I parked in the John Hancock building in ChiTown yesterday and some lady had to look in my trunk and in the back seat...LOL...funny thing is she just looked, I had loads of **** laying around....it was possible I may of even had a bomb laying around with all my ****....I didn't though because I am a good non-terrorist American Guy...

Re: Travel Advisory

Doesn't anyone remember the terrorist hijacking of the cruise ship Achilli Lauro ? (I hope the spelling is OK)

It wasn't manual, they just wanted things in separate trays before the X-ray scanning. Oddly, the equipment actually looked to be better than JFK, but I was thinking the same thing as you. At Heathrow, they must have a side-scan view as well, since they weren't removing laptops or anything else. Of course, the guy running the viewer was about 45, where in the US they all seem to be 20 year olds... possibly McDonald rejects (as reported elesewhere), so that may factor in as well...

Re: Travel Advisory

I'm in Orlando, FL at the moment on a job. In the past 72 hours I have flown with my DVX100A in a Porta Brace bag as a carry-on, from Oklahoma City to Houston to Orlando to Ft. Lauderdale and back to Orlando.

No one has opened my camera bag and took anything out.

Re: Travel Advisory

I remember doing a corporate a/v setup at the hynes convention center in boston, early 2002, with everyone 9/11 security-crazy. I was pushing a giant road-case on wheels with all of the audio snakes, and the guard stopped me (i had walked by 10 times already) and made me open the case, but just glanced in and waved me along. i can't imagine anything looking more like a bomb than a case of audio snakes (giant bundles of colored wire attached to black metal boxes)... more security != better security

Re: Travel Advisory

geeze Barry.. dont tell me your a programer too.. you one busy mofo.

Re: Travel Advisory

Retired programmer. I had my day in the sun as a videogame programmer, but I gave it up in '99 to start the film biz.

Re: Travel Advisory

I did indeed. First employee ever hired, back in 1985, when it was Louis, Brett and me, all working out of Louis' converted-garage bedroom... and I stayed with them through 1998...

Re: Travel Advisory

Thats funny Barry, I met Brett many years ago when he was touring EAC with Don Mattrick. I was senior editor/compositor at EAC at the time. Small world. Any desire to get back into it...I still play around with Virtools..have you seen it.
Westwood made great games in those years...

Re: Travel Advisory

Get back into programming? Probably not. If I got back into the games industry it'd be as a producer. As I understand, the games industry is a little different now -- you actually may make some bucks, and you may not have to work 120-hour weeks... ;D

Re: Travel Advisory

The Command & Conquer line is sweet. Probably my favorite series of games, ever.

But Michael Dorn as an Atreides duke? Who figured that out?
