Transporting C-stands without a grip truck.

Hi guys,

I need to transport 4-6 C-stands in a mid-sized sedan. I would like to get some kind of wheeled box/case/whatever for them. I frequently take one-man or two-man jobs that doesn't need a grip truck, but I find C-stands so useful that I like to take them with me. I'm kind of sick of carrying them two at a time into a building.

Does anyone have any suggestions? All stands are removable-turtle-base types. Replacing my car with a truck or and SUV is not an option.

Something like this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/686544-REG/Petrol_PL2001_Deca_C_Stand_Bag.html but could hold at least 4.

You can easily fit four turtle-base C-stands in a Pelican 1750. Five if you wanna push it(plus throw your back out). But I'm working out of a full size truck, too.

Funny you posted this today as I was just thinking the same thing. I'm in the same boat as one-two man jobs so I don't need c stands often unless im on a bigger project which I just get them to rent some. Still they are usefull to have at least a few, but I was in the same problem of not being able to replace my car with a suv or truck because, well I just bought a new car and while I love it, probably was the best choice for carrying gear.

But like Run&Gun said, the Pelican 1750 might work great and it will even fit in my cars trunk which means it should fit in most mid size trunks (maybe having to push down the back seats if that is an option.)

I know this does not solve your need at the moment, but I'm going to start a thread, probably in support, about transporting your gear, where we can share how we move our kit. What works, what doesn't. Post pics of organizers, trunks, vans, and the like, where everyone can chime in with their ideas and share what works for them.

Here is a tip for carrying as many Cstands (with gag gobos/grip heads on top) as you can lift.

Get a 40' arm attach all the Cstands to that, a bit like a milk maid!

4 is enough for me to carry 2 on each side.

That would be amazing David. Thank you for doing this. Gear transport is an essential part of our jobs.

I've got two of those Petrol c-stand cases. Unless you are pretty tall and pretty strong, I wouldn't recommend more than two in a case. Wrestling these things in an out of cars, up and down staircases, etc. is a PITA. And that's just with two Avenger c-stands with grip arms.

So my advice, get two or three of these things to match your 4-6 c-stands.

Great idea.

Yeah. I fit 3 turtle and 1 standard c-stand in my trunk of my sedan, along with 2-3 beefy babies for most gigs. Them shizzies are heavy. I wouldn't want to put 3-4 c-stands in a case and lug that across a football field, up 3 flights of stairs, etc...

What about a PA and a cart?

This looks like it might be the ticket. I had figured the 1750 might've been too shallow for four, but if it works, then it's perfect.

I'm also considering the Storm im3300. It's a little deeper, but otherwise looks the same.

I test-lifted 4 C-stands connected together via grip arms today (thanks for the idea morgan_moore). It's heavy, obviously, but not unmanageable. If nothing else, I can use the case to wheel the stands from my 3rd floor apartment down to my car.

Thanks to everyone for your inputs.

What c stands fit in that case? I was looking at the impact c stands with turtle base and it said their minimum height is 4.75 ft (57 inches) and the inside of the pelican 1750 is 50 inches. Now I might be reading something wrong but that wouldn't for would it? Or am I missing something because I haven't owned any c stands yet and am looking into getting one or two

Don't get the Impact ones, they're probably six inches taller than the Matthews or Avenger ones and they have a very unusual locking mechanism for the legs. They should still fit since once you remove the turtle base you only have the riser column to deal with in terms of length, but a minimum height of 57" is too much IMO. These mostly get used inside, often times in rooms where you're limited by the ceiling anyways so an extra few inches doesn't really help.

Typical(Matthews, etc.) 40" turtle base c-stands should fit just fine. Just remove the base and arm/grip head. Put the risers in first, then arm/head assembly and then bases on top and it should all fit, no problem. You don't even have to jump up and down on the lid to close it ; )

American has a turtle base that fits in a rectangular milk crate. Not sure if other manufacturers are doing the same, or have been doing it and I've just missed it, but they claim you can stick six bases in a rectangular milk crate. Only reference I've found was at barn door lighting.
