Transforming a photo into footage from the photo location???

Hey all

In a week I will be shooting an aussie hip hop music video (first production with hvx) that will be based around a kid in a record store.
In one of the shots the kid picks up a cd and the album art transforms into footage from the exact location where the still was taken...

I know its a real basic shot but just looking to get some input or advice on shooting this technique and then doing whatever effect in post to achieve this flawlessly (Mac apps).

Thanks in advance, any input or links are greatly appreciated!

Note: As the cd has already been produced there is no chance of shooting the scene and taking a frame to make a mock up, and then tracking the image in post.

The image below is the exact album cover

You start by matching the shot on the cover exactly. Easy to say and tricky to do because of matching the lens, the composition and the actors performance/expressions/ props etc...

Adobe On Location would be helpful in this regard ...if you have it. Use the "onion skin performance" function. Load the still and the camera out put simulataneously

Bringing it to life in the edit is easy or as hard as you want to make it. eg. Cross dissolve out of a freeze frame would be easy. Morph would be trickier

Actually you just take a frame from the location footage and map it onto the album cover. That way you're transitioning between essentially two identical shots. AE, Combustion et al will do it for you.

I'll agree with the second method. Onion skin is a really cool technique for drawing, but it doesn't seem to work as well in computer applications.

If you need to use the original. Why don't you just do a front cover, back cover type thing were the kid picks up the record looks at the original and then flips it over to the back cover. Use your location frame for that and animate from there. Just paint the back cover some kind of matte blue or green for ease in post.
Just an idea. good luck

Thanks guys!

I’m not really wanting to mess with the front cover because its then not as recognizable if someone was to purchase the exact thing, so might work with the back if not try the first method (shooting and match)

Shoot and match - What effect could I use to try to blend the two in post??? Something being more stylish then a dissolve perhaps

I vote keeping it simple:
Why not just recreate the front cover as a video shot?

It doesn't have to be exactly perfect. If it is close enough with the colour grading and juxtaposition to fool the audience for that second, you'll be fine.

It'll save you heaps of time in figuring out lens types, character position etc.
Maybe shoot on a greenscreen and composite the photo background in behind the talent - that'll save you a bit of time too.

All you'll need to do is set a freeze-frame at the start and start it in - it'll save you having to spend hours in post (and on the shoot) blending as well as having to line everyone up to match the photo.

:)

Dont compromise just 'cos its easier but do realise its going to be a big challenge.

Be great to make a vid that everyone says " how the hell did they do that?"

(Have a backup plan for the day)

You can work out the transition once you achieve the match.

Yeah that’s what I’m struggling with... creating an effect to go to the next scene, that hasn't been done before and later thought about "Geee, I wonder how that was done"
