Transferring P2 Footage On Mac

Hey guys I'm trying to copy data from the HPX170 to my Mac using firewire 1394 and my macbook pro won't recognize the P2 card as a drive. I realize how noob this question is but could someone please help me understand how to get my Mac to recognize the P2 card? Do I need to install drivers? Does it require proprietary software to read? Does the camera have to be in PC mode? Do I need FCP or Avid to log and transfer? I've been flipping through Barry's (excellent) book and the manual but I'm still pretty confused as to the process of actually transferring the video files. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You need to make sure the camera is set to firewire device mode in the menu settings. I think it's under "Other Functions" Look for "PC Mode" setting.

My HPX is in 1394 pc mode and I have put it into PC mode with P2CMS installed but still nothing shows up. I formatted the P2 card in MCR mode and have it switched to write protected. What am I doing wrong? Do I need a driver?

Thanks for the help Jester

Thanks Lez, but still no luck...

The LCD says 1394 DEVICE DISCONNECT and nothing appears on my computer.

Wait, I'm a little confused now. I got my HVX200a, and was able to log and transfer in FCP without a problem. I never had to download anything from panasonic's page.

I did I think install a CD that came with it, but I'm not sure if that was what allowed my mac to read the P2 cards or not... Did it? If so, I am shooting for two people this month who will want me to transfer my files to their mac book pros. Should I bring that CD and install it on their mac books as well?

And although I've had no problems with P2/log/transfer, is there a reason I should download something from Panasonic's site?

Barry Green recommends only using M2CMS over 1394 on a Mac so you can be 100% sure everything transferred correctly.

You do not need drivers to connect the camera via Firewire to the Mac. You do need to be in 1394 Device mode, then turn off the camera, then connect the cable from the On Mac to the Off camera, then turn the camera on, then go to MCR, then hold for PC mode. You should then see the P2 card mount.

There are several different recommended ways of getting P2 data from the cards to the HDDs. This is just one of them.
