Transferring P2 data to an external hardrive

wondering if anyone has experience using the hvx to directly transfer footage to an external hardrive without the use of a computer. I haven't done this but read that it can be done. Just wondering if anyone has and can give me an idea of how easy it is. Also after the footage is on the external is it easily transferred into Final Cut? Thanks.

It's very easy to do, and it's covered in The HVX Book if you have that. The resulting footage can be brought into FCP just like any other P2 footage, as the hard disk is an exact clone of what's on the P2 card.

The only reasons it's not done more frequently are that a) using the camera to offload to a hard disk prevents the camera from being used as a camera during that process, and b) you need a self-powered firewire drive. You cannot use a bus-powered firewire drive.

thanks, I have the book and read about it. just wanted to know if anyone had run into issues. Any external hardrive you would recommend for the process?

Also, many drives use 12-14v power supplies to power the drive. I originally purchased the Nebtek Panasonic Batter adapter, which bumps the 7volt camera battery up to 12, to power my firestore, but it has worked on a Maxtor I have as well. That is another option to power a larger drive.
