Transferring footage shot on DVX100b to 16mm or 35mm

Hello everybody

I was wondering if any of you had experience with transferring the footage you shot on your dvx100b to 16mm or 35mm film.

What is the process involved exactly?

Are the results worthwhile?

Would having your material transferred to film give it more "credibility" at film festivals and thus a higher chance of being selected to be screened?

I don't know about transfering digital footage to film but it sure will cost you alot.
I've shot 16mm film and transfered to digital before but it costed me $50 just to do about 3 minute.

yes it will. No matter how boring your film is, if it's film you can win the academy:thumbup:
(do you really need to ask this?)

That's telecining right?

Where they scan the film and convert it into digital media format of choice (uncompressed .mov or .avi) I think?

What resolution did you get out of that?

I have some friends who shot on 35mm and they had it telecined at high def resolution, so I believe 1920x1080....

Also, I am afraid I do need to ask hehe - All my google searches about the credibility of DV just turn up "Shot on DVX100b and selected at festival!" so it all seems kind of rosey and cheery and you can do anything with a dvx100b!

But they don't mention whether or not the final product was handed in on film or some kind of digital tape... or the hundreds of rejected films hehe

well when I shot film I had to first develop it, so that costed me like $50 just to develop a 3 min stock film. after that I wanted to edite it FCP so I had it transfered to ditigal. when I had it transfered I had it transfered on MiniDv tape because it was the cheapest way (SD)
so just to develop & tranfer a 3 minute film it costed me $100 in 16mm. and this is a discounted price I was able to get. (so it should cost more)

I'm not an expert in this so I'm not sure how much it will cost to transfer digital to film but I would imagine it would be around the same price range.
or why don't you just ask your "Friends"?

yes it's ture, no matter how boring your film is, if you shoot with the dvx you can win the academy:thumbup:

It's expensive. Might not be too many people here that have experience with a "film out." Here is a link to Wikipedia (which has some links to vendors): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film-out

ArriLaser is generally regarded as the best process, but also the most expensive.

Are the results worthwhile?

Depends, what are you trying to achieve? Even Cannes doesn't require a film print for short films anymore. I know of few festivals that require a film print of any kind.

Now, the results will be much better than any digital projection you will get at festivals. The projection is almost never bright enough, has weak blacks, and you can usually see the LCD/DLP/whatever pixel gridlines as dark lines on the screen (especially in bright areas of the image). A film out will at least be a continuous tone image with no gridlines, and will have more consistent projection.

I can't imagine. Your film is either good or not. Nothing else matters.
