Transferring AF100 footage from SD cards to editor

From an HVX perspective, I'm accustomed to offloading the entire P2 card folder structure over to a hard drive for editing. Is the AF100 footage on the SD reliant on the folder structure for proper playback or can i just transfer the MTS files? What is the best process?

Barry recommends taking the entire folder structure. I bring over everything in PRIVATE. That works great for me.

I'll do that. Does the root PRIVATE folder need to remain in that naming convention of can i change that? I suppose i can test it. I appreciate the help.

I'm anxiously waiting for Barry's book to arrive.

If you were going to let the editor convert the format for you while ingesting footage, than you would probably need the file structure intact. If you were going to use something like clipwrap to convert to prores, then MTS files is all you need.

I've changed the name of my PRIVATE folders to something like "PRIVATE_intrvw_Jan11" for ease of cataloging and have had no problems. What does happen in FCP log & transfer however is L&T doesnt automatically find and mount the folder. No big deal, just mount it manually.

Thank you. I will try using both methods (keeping the root folder the same and renaming the folder). I'm using a PC, still editing on Vegas 10, while learning Premiere Pro. Both NLE's open the MTS files transfered directly to a new folder without a glitch. Since I'm getting used to a new workflow I'm trying to delvelop the best practice for secure, efficient and organized file storage.

Keeping the folder structure intact (and that includes not renaming the private folder!) will do at least two things for you:
1) It ensures that any NLE will be able to import the files; some NLE's require the entire folder structure. (some can import individual MTS files).
2) It also gives you a playback-capable folder in case you wanted to use that footage on a different device, like a blu-ray player. If you have the whole private folder, you can copy that onto an SD card and then play the footage back on a blu-ray, or another camera or something. Can't do that if you've cherry-picked individual MTS files.

Instead of renaming the private folder, I highly recommend you put it within a custom-named folder. So in Fotojorno's case, instead of renaming PRIVATE to PRIVATE_intrvw_Jan11, I'd say to make a new folder called "Intrvw_Jan11", then copy the complete unmodified PRIVATE folder off the SD card into that new directory.
