transfering from p2 to PCMCIA adapter CF

Hi! its my first time in the forum, so hello to all of you!

and my question is...

Im shoting a film in the desert, so no electricity for a lot of shots and stuff like this.

And I`ve been thinking some ways to save my p2 file. (im working with a HVX)

The idea of transfering in to a laptop is not the best, because of bateries... im afraid i will not have so long batteries.

So, one option, is to use an external hd and transfer via Firewire, when my p2 is full, but i will need an external batery for laptops, i check in some shops and this kind of external baterys allows you also to give batery for hard drives, but im not shure if it will work

Some body have used this already???

The other option, than cab be an experiment but coukd be very intersting is that.

I thougt that maybe is possible to transfer from my 32g p2 to a compact flash card, inserted in a PCMCIA CompactFlash adapter. Using the camera.

Now they are selling 32g CF, so, (i know that i can not record directly to this kind of card) if first i record in the p2, can I later transfer this to the second slot where i have this Adapter???

It will be an incredible solution for me, i read in some messages from some years ago some topics near to this, and some body explains that is not posible to use this metod to record directly, because there is not the chip, that makes p2 work, but, if I use just for storage, maybe its working, in this post i read, some body explained that one idea, is to export from the p2 to the SD card, but they are just 1 g so its quaty crazy option, but why not to a CF 32 g???

sorry for my bad english...

No. CompactFlash in an adapter will not work in the camera.

You can buy a battery-powered USB On-The-Go drive and use that to offload footage. Or you can get a Nexto CF2525 battery-powered firewire enclosure and use that to offload footage to; you should be able to offload about 110GB before the battery is dead in the Nexto. Or you can just use a laptop and get one of those external battery systems, but really -- how much footage are you talking about shooting? A laptop should last for at least a good three to four hours, right? It takes 16 minutes to copy a 32GB card, so you should be able to offload at least 9 to 12 cards before you're out of battery power, and 12 card full of 80 minutes of footage each = about 1,000 minutes of footage...

Thanks so much Barry... but...

I already tryed with a USB On the go, from lacie, and i give it back to the shop because it was not working, later i read in the camera manual, it its written that the camera doest give power to anything, also i tryed given power to the hardisk with the computer, but the camera dindt want to recognize the Hd anyway, so i discarded this option, I dont know maybe i made something wrong???

I will try with the nexto, Its sound good!

Why not a laptop???
Actually is also a good option, but Im afraid that my laptop can get in risk, with al the sand and the wind in the desrt, so im trying to find another solution, also because my laptop battery, is almost dead, so its mean i shuld get an external battery, so its more things to carry, batery and laptop, than just a hardisk.

In the shooting there are a lot of locations, that you need to walk around 1 hour to get in to the place, climbing mountains, and very dificult ways, so im trying to dont have so many things to carry, and thats why im searching for small things.

But really thaks a lot, i will try with powered firewire, i think it will be the best solution I though , that it doesnt exist this kind of hardisk, stupid me!

Although not mentioned here, what precautions have you implemented to protect the cam as well?

Because an exposed cam is probably more a concern than a laptop.

By all means, the Nexto CF2525 with a 120GB hard disk in it is what you should be using. It'll fit in your pocket, it's battery-powered, and you can use the camera to offload to it.

If you need more than 120GB of storage for one day, you'll need other battery power. Fortunately the Nexto has an external battery, and as long as you get a compatible additional battery you should be able to get all the storage space you need from that.

sorry for double asking but why cant i use a CF to PCIAMCI card adopter to record in CF cards ??? some panny chip programming trick ??? i believe the 32GB Cf now give 45MBps sustained data rate write speed. then why not ???
