Transfer to tape

I know the point of a tapeless camera is to avoid this but can you transfer from camera via HDMI to a VTR...say HDCAM?

I work at a TV station and would like to back-up some stuff on tape.

If so, will the quality be poor because of the compressed image?

Not via HDMI (unless they have a special HDMI->HD-SDI converter box) but you can do it through analog component, yes.

The image will be about the same; HDCAM is pretty good, it will preserve most of what you recorded. It's 1440x1080 so you might lose a little tiny bit of horizontal resolution, but other than that, it should look pretty much identical. HDCAM is a superior recording format to AVCHD, so it should be able to hold on to just about everything that your already-compressed footage has recorded.

Thanks Barry. I'm wondering what the image will look like if I transfer camera to HDCAM compared to a typical workflow. For example, log and transfer of footage, edit in Prores and exporting to HDCAM tape at the end.

Any idea?
