Transcoding for Media Composer

Hi,

I'm hoping someone can save me a lot of time. I'm not an Avid user but i'm prepping footage for an Avid Editor.

I'm wanting to generate proxy footage that would work directly with Avid (on Windows) without another step of transcoding (there are real reasons i need to do this and not just hand over the source files).

So i downloaded the MC trial but it's all a bit confusing :)

- Avid ONLY accepts MXF wrapped files? True?
- There are limited codecs that don't require a reencode? I want to use a 720p proxy (1080 original). My originals are 220mbit DNxHD and some AVCHD. I can transcode all these into 720p DNxHD 60mbit but those files are too large for proxies. I could use the 36mbit 1080p but i want them ideally 720p

So is there a good choice for this? A 720p proxy that can edit in real time that's lower than 60mbit?

And i'm transcoding through Nuke which doesn't seem to offer MXF wrapping - is there any way to have AVid use something other wrapper?

I really appreciate any help at all here! It would save me a lot of time

if you want dnxhd, and your on windows and have quicktime pro(or quicktime, nit sure if you need the pro), get dnxhd codec(you probably had that installed with media composer), get 'mpeg streamclip', file->open files (you can batch process with streamclip)-><select file, open>.
file-> export to quicktime->
compression:avid dnxhd codec <choose options to the right of the dropbox>, resolutions 1080/23.976 dnxhd 36 8bit, OK
frame size 1280x720
uncheck interlaced scaling
click on make movie

there is an avid option for 720p/23.976 dnxhd 60 8bit as a default setting.

of course there are other codecs out there and there are other software that can do the same on windows and mac operating systems. that's just what is currently open in front of me.
 
just as a heads up the meta data for video info or stream info or file details will say the file resolution as the one you selected as an option from avid default options but quicktime will recognize the real resolution.

and if it's proxy you don't really have to worry about encoding the file twice, dnxhd is good enough that it does not degrade that much after the first generation loss, and even then it's just minute detail not something earth shattering.
 
and if it's all just for a proxy that will play in his NLE, you can easily send him two folders, one with .mp4 h.264 640x360 at 5 - 20mbps(overkill) and a jpg sequence (640 x 360)with a PCM or mp3 audio.
