Transcoding/Best File Format

So, I am currently in the process of leading a team of videographers for an event. I will also be editing the official video. However, since a few of them are using flip minos and a separate camera. They're encoded in Mpeg4 H264. My question is what is the best transcoder for a PC? and what is the best file format to transcode to for editing? (avi, wmv etc)

Regards,
Gayle

Cineform NeoSCENE will do what you need. It costs $129. It is the only intermediate lossless codec that's fast to both encode and decode. Any other intermediate codec that's free are usually slow to edit on Vegas.

If you don't mind losing a bit of quality, you can transcode to mpeg2 at 25 mbps.

Yea, I like cineform but don't generally recommend it as a first option, but in this case, it's the best tool for the job.

Huffyuv if the machine is 32 bit. Lagarith if it's not. But there are performance issues if you aren't running RAID. I used DNxHD but Vegas doesn't like quicktime formats. I live with the issues because for me the benefits outweigh them.

If you want fast, clean, and trouble-free then buy Cineform. It's very unfortunate that no other solid option exists. I can't use Cineform.
