Transcode to Canopus HQ or DVCPROHD

yeah, edius neo 2 comes with the cam and has canopus hq, allowing you to use the awesome avc2hq converter. I absolutely love that codec, especially since it plays nice with vegas and p2 doesn't (without raylight). As far as I understand, the quality will be better thanks to full raster (1:1 pixels) resolution.

No, Canopos HQ is also 1440x1080p, just like DVCProHD.

There is also Avids free codec. DNxHD. Full raster, 8 or 10 bit. The lower bit rate verison of the codec are superb. I generally use the mainconcept DVCProHD transcoder for most things. If I am doing FX, color graidng and or HD out then I use DNxHD.

You're right, I assumed based on the full-raster avi files the converter made. I found the white paper on canopus hq and it is 1440, but with higher chroma resolution than dvcprohd. DNxHD looks good, but I haven't used it yet.

Aren't DVCProHD and Canopus HD both 4.2.2?? SO how can Caopus have a higher chroma res?

I convert HMC150 files to Canopus HQ with the AVCHD converter app and they are still 1920x1080. Barry Green confirmed this in another thread as well. I think the whitepaper specs for the codec are just out of date.

NO. The final resolution stays 1920 but it is rescaled from 1440. That is also why DVCProHD shows as 1920x1080 but is really 1440x1080.

That is correct. That info is out of date. Canopus HQ is 1920x1080. Canopus/GV has never been known to be the fastest on updating some of their web paper work

Are you guys sure DVCPRO is 1440x1080? I thought it was 1280x1080, it's kind of confusing because I guess a PAL hvx is 1440x1080 and a NTSC hvx is 1280x1080. I guess my DVCPRO is 1280x1080.

1920x1080
1280x720

Codec really only encodes 1440x1080 AS 1920x1080 (when in 1080 mode).

As for updated codec... I'll have to look into that. I was sure I saw a recent document showing otherwise.

Another thing. If it is a true 1920x1080 codec then why does it state it as being 1440x1080 in procoder 3?

I just want to see some bonified documented proof before I will start using it. :)

Regardless, DNxHD is a better codec.

EDIT: This document seems to confirm 1920x1080, though it does not do so in a way that makes it obvious. Page 10. But then Grassvalley has never been one known for being overly informative. lol Still wondering why procoder 3 gives you no 1920x1080 option.

Probably because Procoder hasn't been updated in forever. There aren't even any official Blu-Ray presets. There are some user-created ones on the GV forums though.

Ahh. well it sure leads to confusion.

I still like DNxHD but for 720 60P I wonder which encodes faster as 720 60P is a hog.

I don't think that pdf I posted really tells you anything in depth as far as bit rates etc. I'm wondering how it compares to the lower bit rate versions of DNxHD?

Anyone know of any good links?

All this stuff does my head in !

I use the canopus HQ codec for delivery on the show I do, as the main editor for the show uses edius. When i'm doing my own stuff I just edit native in Vegas 9c.

I use Edius and just to clarify:

I would always choose Canopus HQ over DVCPro HD for the full raster capability and Canopus HQ is less compressed than DVCPro HD.

Also, DVCPro HD is 1280x1080

HDV is 1440x1080

It is very confusing but this is one of the great reasons I enjoy editing on Edius, it just does not matter. The program will handle anything you throw at it. But full raster always wins on quality and ease of editing in terms of computer resources needed. (no decoding)

I edit in Avid and Edius. Waiting for the dang booster for Edius 5. Though I usually transcode intraframe codecs anyway.

You're right. I was mixing up the DVCProHD Pal 50i with NTSC 60i

DVCPRO HD uses smaller raster size than broadcast high definition television: 960x720 pixels for 720p, 1280x1080 for 1080/59.94i and 1440x1080 for 1080/50i. Similar horizontal downsampling compression is similar to many other HD formats. To maintain compatibility with HDSDI, DVCPRO100 equipment upsamples video during playback.
