Training recommendations?

I've been using Premiere Pro CS4 and CS5 for 2 years but only dabble with after effects now and then. I've watched some tutorials and tried a few things but quickly get lost. I need help and I need to devote some time and effort.

Have any of you used a live training course? The ones I've found typically run 3 days and cost around $1400.

Lynda.com and Kevin Kramer seem good online choices.

I would like a comprehensive program that begins with the very basics and grows to the more advanced features. I'd really apreciate any advice from those who have positive experiences with training programs. Thank you.

For the money, I'd go with Video Copilot for the basic 10 tutorials (free), then to Lynda, then back to VCP for advanced tutorials and techniques. $1400 is a ton of money to spend on firehose training that you'll likely forget.

BTW, if you are referring to VCP founder, it's Andrew Kramer.

Thanks for your recommendations. It seems like a good plan. The 'firehose' training was never a serious consideration due to the expense and the point you bring up.
And yes, I meant Andrew Kramer. My brain must have the weekend off.

Personally, a few years of soaking in Behind-the-scenes videos of FreddieW and Corridor Digital have taught me a few After Effects techniques that I've used for things other than muzzle flares. Additionally, Film Riot on youtube is more well-rounded compared to FreddieW or Corridor Digital. I've used quite a few things from that show as well. I haven't used Video Copilot too much, but they're definitely a great resource.

As story2rewrite said, it's a very steep learning curve, but you'll pick it up very quickly if you're persistent.

Buy the book After Effects Apprentice. Video training is good but at times AK can have a quicker pace if ur not ready. Also, the authors of this book basically have PH.D in After Effects and are highly regarded as trusted learning source

I know but from experience the book was able to get me on track to learning AE before they released the videos. Chad Perkins Lynda training definitely took me to an intermediate/advanced level afterwards. With this program, there are many avenues to learn it

Mark Christensen's book was the most useful thing I've used. Video CP has some amazing stuff - but when the guy starts making lame jokes (on almost every tut I've seen), I really grit my teeth...
