how does 1 make trails like keeping a camera's shutter open at night when cars drive by (seeing headlight trails) using the dvx?
is it possible altogether using video?
I have the first dvx100 model...
Any input welcome.

I don't know what can be done in post, but in camera you can set the shutter speed to the very lowest (1/25 on PAL, don't know in NTSC). It won't really give you the degree of the effect you want, but you can try it out. :)

Sorry but really this is beyond any version of the DVX. You need a long exposure time and 1/25th pal and 1/24th ntsc doesnt cut it. That said I did shoot one hour of footage like this and increased speed to something like 15000% so like 4 seconds of of footage which looked pretty nice.... but no trails. You need something with a lot slower shutter speed like 1/3rd.

I edit in Vegas.
Each video track has "enable motion blur" switch.
I turn it on and go into project properties to choose which type of motion blur to use (gaussian etc).
Also, in the project, I can select the amount of motion blur applied to the track by turning the slide button from 0 to 100 I think.
I really do not know how to do it in FCP but I am sure you can search your FCP help file for "motion blur" and see if it helps.

Cheers

umm i can set my DVX 100b's shutter to 1/6 with the slow shutter setting. (default USER 1 button if my memory serves)

that should be quite adequate to give some trails if you're using a tripod.

I haven't actually tried this though and you might have more control in post, not sure but worth a shot.

Your right the 100b does have 1/6th. Post is not a great option, theres only so much you can do. 1/6th on the b isnt a bad start never tried it so.........

I did a motion capture for one of the still competitions using 1/12th on the DVX and got some great streaking of leaves falling.

EDIT: Here's what it looked like.
