trailer rough cut...

This here is a rough cut of a trailer for a film we've been working on for about 6 months or so. I'd posted some stills earlier as it times to go into post mode.

The music will probably be replaced and I have some cropping issues in AE that have to be dealt with along with normalizing some audio and replacing the answering machine shot. Otherwise, here it is.

That Was...Ok :o But you need a Shite more of work done and make it look like 24p! no offence but my pd150 got better stuff than that! Can't wait to see the final cut

Mike . . . that WAS 24p. Criticism is fine as long as it's constructive, but don't get insulting, especially when you're off-base.

Pretty cool. Enough to interest me but there were a few things that bothered me.

The titles were a bit much for my taste. I tend to think its more professional looking if you just choose a really clean, modern font and not mess with it. A subtle zoom is ok, but whenever there are effects (unless they are really good) it comes off a little cheesy. It also felt like the opening titles hung around too long (22 seconds that could be cut down to about 10).

Since this was sort of a teaser, not much story explanation or dialogue, it should have had a faster pace to it. See if you can keep almost all of the shots you have but trim the whole thing down to around 60-75 seconds. Just don't trim the first two shots (the answering machine and Jimmy's friend on the phone), they were really good. So you can trim the the opening titles down to 10 seconds and still leave enough room for the answering machine audio, then you have the first couple shots which play really nice at 12 seconds, that leaves you around 38-53 seconds to blast through those remaining 12 action shots and 4 title cards.

A minor thing that stood out to me was the camera shake as it pushed in on the answering machine in the first shot. Was it intentional? If not it can be fixed and I think it would look cleaner.

My last criticism is the use of black and white. Unless there is a good reason for it I would just think it was because the lighting was bad. Not bad as in not enough but bad as in coloration or shadows. Was there a reason for going to black and white?

Otherwise...

The characters looked real. When I saw a guy with a gun he looked like a guy that would have a gun. The lady in the trunk looked scared. All very convincing.

The dialogue of Jimmy's friend leaving the answering machine message was great. Good performance.

The props, locations, make up, etc, looked great.

The 'zoom blur' transitions were cool too.

Looking forward to seeing more!

Who's mike?
I have to agree that the tiltes seem a little of an overkill for the type of film that you are showing. The film looks pretty raw and gritty, yet the titles are slick and distract from the visuals. I would also say that it looked a little bit flat. However, the action looked pretty good and it looks like you spent some time with framing and composition. Keep it up.

Re: trailer rough cut...

I think the director needs to work on extracting proper actions from the actors. It seemed that everyone was indeed acting. With the exception of this... i thought it was alright.

Re: trailer rough cut...

Thanks for your support, critisisms and protection from Danny. B&W is used as a simple device as much of the movie is presented in the past (B&W) but being told in the present (color). It may have to be rethought because the scenes were really nice looking in color. Point well taken on the titles, you get a new AE plug and you go freakin' nuts.

It's a fairly dark, unhappy film so the DP conciously kept lighting to a minimum, but I also need to learn how code a WMV better. I probably should have coded an QT as well.
