Hi guys,

I just finished the trailer for a new short movie called 'Scripted Work' (in Dutch 'Afgesproken Werk'). The movie is a surrealistic drama-piece, that we want to send to several film festivals in dvd-format.

The trailer (<10 MB) does not have yet English subtitles (the movie itself has English and German subtitles), I'll work on that the coming weeks. But I'd like to share the music and atmosphere it reflects of our production.

More info about the story etc can be found at www.orphicfilm.nl/html/aw.html

Check the trailer (QT and WMV) at www.orphicfilm.nl/html/aw-media.html (some people have trouble playing the QT version with the newest QT7 player for Windows).

Best regards,

looks awesome.. very filmic... wish I could speak Dutch though

did you shoot with the anamorphic adapter?

Thanks. I shot with the DVX100 PAL, using the 16:9 letterbox option. I created a 1:2.00 frame with Vegas and did a digital letterbox to anamorphic conversion with Vegas. I always thought that would not be wise to do, but checking out the results on a high end LCD tv (using a progressive scan dvd-player, component cables and a Loewe tv widescreen LCD tv) I found out that it works great!! The image quality is marvelous.

The image looks great. Really slick. Nice clea camera movements as well.

Not sure what the story was...but I image if I understood the dialogue it'd be clearer.

Curious about the size of the production, gear used etc...

Great work,

Cool stuff. May I suggest tweaking your color correction just a little so that the subjects you film pop out on the screen more than they do currently. I really like the shot composition and the musical score was outstanding. Too bad I don't understand what they're saying :(

Congrats on the trailer though. And good luck in your festival run!

A quick/rough translation of the titles are as follows:
- women: You see yourself. But when you close your eyes, you see nothing.
- man voiceover: it's better not to talk to other people.
- women wisphers: I know what you're up to!
- man voiceover: When you think about it, you find out how humble and little knowing you are.

There is some story info on the website. It's about a writer visiting a library, working on a story that he is verifying on location (smell, behavior of people, sound, etc.). And he is unwantedly confrontated by a young lady with some obsession. It's about perception and controlling of reality, can't say more about it as I would spoil the plot.

The size is of the production is very basic: 1 DVX100 PAL, 1 Vinten Pro5 tripod, 1 Manfrotto FigRig for handheld shots, 1 wooden plate with 3 wheels as a tripod dolly, 3 basic 0,8 K lights, a professional soundrecording man feeding the DVX100 via XLR with the dialog audio. Two main characters, about 25 people supporting cast for filling up the environment. The crew was very basic (production and make-up). The musician used his guitar, sampler and a friend with a cello to compose the soundtrack, which is really great (he had a lot of editing to do to keep the cello on the right speed and within audible measures). All editing and dvd authoring was done with Vegas 6/DVDA 3. The budget is about 2,500 dollars, including the fee for the screen-rights of the original story.

The coloring was done on purpose. It’s a combination of desaturation and pushing up the contrast. The ligths we had were very simple and harsch, so we had to take that into account in post production. The people who saw the dvd found it looking very great, on tv the contrast is far better than the compressed web output.

Ah, completely understandable then. For some reason, the degradation of image quality in web output completely slipped my mind, lol.

Well done. I would like to see more (thus the trailer has served its master well.) Please keep us informed with updates.

Looks goed.

The film is 18 minutes and 21 seconds in length. I did a rough translation somewhere above.

In the photo section of your page I noticed a shot of the camera setup. The camera was on some sort of spin wheel or something. Is that for making spin shots?

-Nice work. Very film like.

I want a DVX-100 too :(

The wheel you see is a FigRig, a kind of steadycam device made by Manfrotto. You're supposed to walk with it, holding it as a wheel. It works good for panning and slow walking shots. You've seen a picture where I attached it on top of my tripod, I stopped doing that after half a day as it's not very practical like that.
The FR has a plate that's compatible with my Vinten Pro5 tripod, so switching between the FR and the Vinten is a matter of seconds.

Nice look. So you got that look without using any adapter, I'm a vegas user, I'd like to know how you made it look so good. Real film like.

The look is very basic. Using a DVX100 PAL, a slightly modified Scenefile F6 with cinegamma and 25P. Using the 16:9 letterboxed widescreen of the DVX100. I edited the video in a widescreen anamorphic projectfile with Vegas (and adjust the preview window aspect ratio setting and also the Switches value of all videosegments on the timeline). To create a wider look, I made my own 1:2.00 mask with the Pan/Crop tool of Vegas. As it's all still within a 16:9 anamorphic environment, you get small letterbox bars in the top and bottom of the screen. No harm.
The coloring is a combination of desaturation and pushing up the contrast. The ligths we had were very simple and harsch, so we had to take that into account in post production.
